Power cut victim needs help: screwed up display by Aeryn on 02-05-2006 at 12:33 PM

Operating system: Win XP SP2
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 9550

The problem is as follows.

Today when I had just come to my pc and started surfing on the internet and stuff, there was a power cut. The pc rebooted, but already before XP loaded, in addition to what appears usually on the screen, there were all kinds of small squares and stripes (you'll probably get a better idea when you see screenies).

I tried to reboot once again, still it didn't look 'okay'.

This is what my desktop looked like when I logged on to XP:

On the right, there are four clear 'bars' formed of vertical stripes, which are always there, never disappeared.

Also, I should note that some of the icons in the start menu and probably all of the file icons in folders also looked kinda 'broken'.

Although, the visual aspect aside, the pc thankfully seems to work as fine as ever.

Now, I uninstalled ATI drivers and installed new ones, which didn't do anything except for the fact that now all the icons look like normal.

Also one interesting thing - occasionally if I move some window over the icons on desktop, the blue stripes around them disappear for a while. But nothing helps for the vertical stripes on the right.

The current situation:

(Btw, there's the kinda blue stuff around the mouse pointer too, which don't appear on the screenie.)

So what's wrong? Any ideas, suggestions would be more than welcome. And feel free to ask additional info, if needed.

Most likely, the answer being your graphics card has been damaged. Try using another graphics, if available to check if thats the cause or not

Hmm, I see. Thanks. Unfortunately there's no other gc to try, though..

I think it's to do with the pipelining. I think dont quote me on it :P
Is the mointor adapter put in the gpu properly?

he vertical wires inside the screen sometimes "stick" together. The solution is to lightly hit the side of your monitor to jar them apart. Notice the word "lightly"

For him to be able to take a screenshot with those conditions on it, it's obviously the graphics card (he ain't taking a picture to the monitor duh).. Just wait for cookie to see this thread or go to the store where you bought the gc and demand a new one OR go to your electricity company and demand cash for the damage they caused!

To me it looks like the power cut might have fried some of the power circuitry in the gfx card.

That's what I was thinking...

Chances are you'll have to buy a new graphics card... You can get some pretty good cheap cards out there, try and buy one off of ebay or something :).

Thanks for the replies, everyone. :) Guess I'll have to call some "specialist" to come take a look at it (yes, I'm rather nooby with computers myself :p).

just spit-balling here, buti'm guessing (seeing as it's a radeon 9550) you have 3 ports on it, try running the monitor on another port and see if you get the same situation.
