Deleted My Documents! by Chris4 on 02-18-2006 at 09:54 PM

I stupidly ran a program called WinsockXPFix, selected "registry backup" and then selected My Documents for the registry file to be saved to. What I was suppost to do was include the file it it like so...

C:\Documents and Settings\Chris L\Documents\file.reg

But I just put...

C:\Documents and Settings\Chris L\Documents\

Note: I renamed 'My Documents' to 'Documents'

So it overwrited all my files in My Documents!

I tried system restore but forgot that it doesn't do anything with personal files!

Is there any way I can get all my pictures, music, and hard work back!? :(

Not sure if it will work, but it may be worth a try:

Btw, is your connection fixed? Rather than running that WinsockXPFix thing, try the command i posted in your thread.

RE:Broadband Problem
I tried it, didn't do anything. I posted on an NTL website and it seems I have to call out an engineer! Thanks anyway.

You may want to look for reviews of that program on the internet, because i just got it from searching. But from what i saw it looked quite good.

Have you tried doing a System Repair? not a system restore

RE: Deleted My Documents! by Joe on 02-18-2006 at 11:07 PM

Not sure if it'll work or if it's the same thing as what was previously posted... but Restoration can do what you asked for... unless it's too late.

Same thing Select or Press, an yes that is what i mean Recovery Console,  it may work but then again it maynot, but worth a try
RE: Deleted My Documents! by matty on 02-19-2006 at 02:00 AM

No you dont want to run the recovery console or even repair Windows. It will only make things worse.

Man, i think we're in to lots of confusion right here..

One thing is when you boot from the windows cd and press R..
This will appear :

BUT, if you press enter instead of R, and press R after you'll get a thingie which will recover many aspects of your windows..

RE: Deleted My Documents! by Chris4 on 02-20-2006 at 11:52 AM

I'll try "System Repair" but whenever I use my Windows XP CD, it always says that my version of windows is not the same as the one of the CD (probely because I've updated?)

But I'll try it (at school at the moment).

RE: Deleted My Documents! by CookieRevised on 02-20-2006 at 07:42 PM

tbh, and to be quite frankly and blunt, you may as well simply give it up....

Doing all those things will do NOTHING good, in fact it will make things worse.
(even rebooting Windows may already have destroyed anything you could've undeleted)

If the helpers here actually advised the proper thing instead of advising to use tools which are not intended for such things and will actually and mostlikely have overwritten already any data you could undelete, you may have had a chance to undelete your files.

"System Restore", "Recovery Console", "System Repair", etc are NOT backup tools, neither are they used for recovering lost data!!!!!! They are used to recover a malfunctioning Windows installation. Never, EVER, suggest to use those tools for the purpose of undoing an installation, recovering lost files or any other related thing. They are ONLY to be used when Windows is seriously malfunctionning...

If they are indeed overwritten, there is nothing you can do about it, they are lost forever. (unless you have a backup of the data of course)

However, if they are just deleted, you may have (had! see above) a chance to undelete them by using an undelete (or unerase) tool.
RE: Deleted My Documents! by Chris4 on 02-20-2006 at 09:41 PM

Thanks Cookie.

Tried some of the tools, got some stuff back, then found out it was all currupted (ie. my homework etc. was replaced with jumble like "gpiajsdffgop"), so deleted all of them. Got a few pictures back. All the music was corrupted so deleted all them aswell.

Grr, stupid program. Why did it have to replace everything :@

Thanks anyway.

No, you can go on to select your Windows installation and the installer will try and repair it.

Anyway, back to the topic. And how about, as Cookie said, we stop talking about crap which is completely wrong.

The program shouldn't have been able to overwrite your documents folder. The program wouldn't have been able to open and write to the folder as if it was a file.

It's hard to explain why, but I don't think it would have overwritten the folder with a file.

It's weird because it didn't accually overwrite the folder, just everything in it.

I was watching My Documents, then everything suddenly disapeared and was replaces with a file :O But it doesn't matter now...
