Messenger crashes when i sign in by saralk on 02-22-2006 at 08:19 PM
Whenever i try to sign in to msn, it automatically crashes (i.e. comes up with a message about sending a message to Microsoft).
I have tried to reinstall MSN Messenger, repair MSN but I don't know what to do now.
It appears to work when i start the PC up, but then it doesn't work after that.

Any plugins or viruses? Could be hooking on causing the error.

Same here I have the same problem,
It sometimes signs in sometimes it doesnt!! Like now it has crashed

Do you have rather a lot of custom emoticons/winks/backgrounds by any chance? If you have too many it severely slows down messenger just after signing in, and perhaps causes it to crash.

i hardly have any custom emotes. It crahses as soon as I click on signin, i don't even get a chance to get to the spinning logo thing

how long has this been going on for? you may have to use a system restore (may work) or if worst comes to worst, i say format your HD!

I tried a system restore, but it says that I cannot restore to this restore point. All the ones after this one are post msn crash problem and all the ones before it got deleted when i tried to restore.

What exactly does the error message say?

It says
"Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"
it then goes on to ask me to tell microsoft about this problem

Wait a min is this 8.0? if so try downgrading to 7.5

You could always try deleting the MSN Messenger Application Data From: C:\Documents and Settings\<win Username>\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger. you'll lose any custom display pics/emotions etc tho.
Once your in that folder download the id number Identifier (from here: http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=15519&page=&#pid=132217 (see 3rd post) then work out your number and delete the folder.
