Strange delay when beginning a convo with a specific contact. by DJ_The_SP on 03-05-2006 at 09:11 PM

Hey,

For a pretty long period now i have noticed that there is a weird long delay when i want to start a conversation with one specific contact in my msn list.

I know for a fact that this is the contact i talk to the most so most likely our log size is the biggest.

Could that be a cause?

Its nothing on his end, because he lives at 2 different houses (divorced parents) and can use both MSN 7.5 and Windows Messenger without getting the delay if he wants to talk to me.

I have gotten the message warning about a too big log file size often but i always just change the name and then save the log so it can create a new one.

Does anyone know what could solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

What logs are you using? Plus! logs or Messenger logs? Plus! logs should never get that big.

How can i see the difference?

Next to that im only guessing that could be the cause.. maybe its something else. ;)

Nope, as i said... no matter where he is, what messenger he uses or what avatar he sets.

There's always the delay.. so clearly its something on my side.
(Some sort of log check is what im thinking).

But of course that is why im asking you guys. :)

Wich version of Messenger are you using?  If your using WLM it's beta so there may be errors.  If your using MSN Messenger try deleting some of the old logs or saving them to a different directory because if there are to many it may slow down your msn messenger.  Just a theory.

I'm using the regular MSN 7.5 (Build 7.5.0322).
And of course MSGPlus v3.62.146. :)

Which logs do i remove...

I know there are both .txt logs and .xml logs? :)

Thanks for any info.

The .xml logs are done by messenger itself, the .txt (or .ple for encrypted ones) logs are by Plus!. Based on a post by CookieRevised a little while back, this is probably caused by the .xml logs by Messenger, since they need to be adjusted each time message is saved (or something). If they are too long, it takes time, which is why they have some limit. The Plus! logs won't have this kind of problem - it just appends the new text to the end of the log.

You can turn off the logging by Messenger in > Tools > Options > Messages > Uncheck "Automatically keep a history of my conversations"

Try moving or renaming the log file for that contact, and see how it goes.

Edit: Cookie's posts I mentioned are in Max Size Of Chat Log?!

Great!

Removing the XML logs seems to have done the trick.

Thanks a lot. :D
