Folders Don't open! by Val on 04-01-2006 at 02:32 PM

Problem

Well this was a very stupid thing of me to do....

Today I got this icon pack and wanted to chang all icons inculding normal folders. So I did by going into control panel -> folder options -> file types -> Folders -> advanced -> change icon. Right after that when I clicked any folder it would just open a blank folder with nothing inside and a search at the side. Luckily shortcuts work :D

Some people told me that I had changed the way that windows opens folders.... so in that box it just says Explorer and Open in the actions...

Windows Version: Windows XP, 5.01.2600
Service Pack: 2

If anyone know how to fix this I would be very happy :D

What we know

  • You can open a folder with right clicking and selecting open
  • We can't fix this yet
  • When double clicking on folder it opens a blank window with the search open.
  • This effects all user accounts if set by admin

Thanks,
ValSpy

I'm not sure what you mean,
Do you mean you replaced all the icons with the icon Pack?

No I manualy did this by going into control panel -> folder options -> file types and changed each icon well not everyone just got down to a few when the folders thing started happening

I dont know whether this will help but go to:
Control Panel> Folder Options>File types>Click on the ones you changed. Once it's highlighted click on advanced  then clcik on "set defaults"
Hope it helps

Hmm I think that just sets the action selected to be defualt.... I will try it ;)

Thanks hope this works :D

EDIT:  Nope :(

Not sure if this will help, but worth a try.

Download Tweak UI

Go to Repair > Repair Icons > Click 'Repair Now'

Edit: Nevermind, doesn't do anything.

Edit: Now I just messed it up myself by going into Folder Options, every time I double click a folder, it opens the 'Search' box :S

Are you saying you can only open a folder like in this picture?

Yes. When you double click, it goes to 'Search', and I'm pretty sure this happens with ValSpy aswell.

Just looking at the top bit.. default is set to 'Search' instead of 'Open..

One of your registry keys got messed up. Check out the MSKB article about it.

Unfortunatly I'm still having problems.

I done exactly what it said on that site, which got rid of 'Search' as default, but made 'Explore' default and not 'Open'.

Also when I put a folder in Start > Run box (Ex. C:\Program Files), I get this:

Please help :(

I know this is reviving an old thread, and the solution may have been found, but try this:
HKCR\Directory\shell\find\command
Set the Default value to '%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe'

If that doesn't work, I'll make a reg backup of HKCR\Directory\shell for you to apply, as folders work fine on my machine.
