Goth? Read here. by Adeptus on 04-06-2006 at 03:06 AM
Interesting article someone brought to my attention today:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/n.../03/20/ngoth20.xml
Would any goths care to comment?
RE: Goth? Read here. by WDZ on 04-06-2006 at 04:22 AM
Hmm...
/me checks date of article to see if it says April 1st... nope.
Oh well... I guess there may be some inaccurate stereotypes, but I'm glad I don't know any of those weirdoes.
RE: Goth? Read here. by Pyroteq on 04-06-2006 at 04:45 AM
That article, is largely incorrect.
BTW Manson is not part of a goth culture, nor is his style of music.
Manson and his band are actually "Industrial"

I hate the way people label themselves to be honest Why can't people just be people? Not goths, chavs, trendies
To be fair though, most goths that I've met have been okay (if not a little apathetic)
RE: Goth? Read here. by Hank on 04-06-2006 at 06:23 AM
some goths i met are rather nice...

I didn't say the way we label other people .
People are like, "Yeah I'm a modern-aged new punk goth" (someone said that to me once, I was like wtf).
RE: Goth? Read here. by segosa on 04-06-2006 at 06:52 AM
So you hate people labelling themselves, but you don't mind labelling people yourself? I see.
RE: Goth? Read here. by user27089 on 04-06-2006 at 07:08 AM
Bah, I'll explain:
If somebody labels themself, then I think it's a little bit pathetic when they're like "yeah i'm a new-aged rocker on speed". They are what they want to be, so if they want to be called a rocker, I'll call them a rocker.
The only people I don't care about labelling are chavs

RE: Goth? Read here. by Menthix on 04-06-2006 at 07:38 AM
I'm not goth myself. But I do listen to the music, have some goth friends... and been on a few goth parties.
"Goth" is all one big label to the outside, but there are actually a lot of people inside such groups who think totally different from eachother. Yes, there are those depressed fucks... but the most goths I know can be matched with that article for the most part...
"The values of the goth subculture are very high-brow," she said. "They tend to enjoy old poetry, books and the arts.
- Well, far from all are interested in that, but i know at least a few who do, yes
"It is a peaceful subculture - drugs and anti-social behaviour do not play a big part.
- They don't all drink and do drugs... I was in fact quite suprised how many people didn't drink alcohol at all on my first goth party
"Many parents worry because they think their children may be depressed or suicidal when they start wearing black but this is not usually the case.
- There are depressed and suicidal people everywhere these days. There certainly are quite a few in goth groups, but most I know are not depressed at all, but actually very happy fun people
"They tend to have a sarcastic sense of humour and be able to express their feelings.
- True (for most)
"Another worry is the fetish fashion of some goths, especially with the females. But my research shows that the girls are not overtly sexual.
- True I guess
"In fact, they are usually believers of love and romance, not one night stands."
- I don't think a goth lifestyle has much influence on that... overall they probably have just as much one night stands as "normal people"
"Most goths don't think of Marilyn Manson as being part of the subculture," she said.
- True
"But even though he and some goth bands do push the boundaries with their lyrics, these are not usually taken too seriously.
- A lot of goth lyrics are about celebrating death and such. There are people who think the lyrics are pretty important. But that doesn't mean they're gonna kill themselves... they're just not afraid of death.
"Goths are not satanists. They are usually intelligent youngsters who have rejected the idea that teenagers must fulfil certain criteria.
- Mostly true, but I’m sure there are satanic goths too... but just a very small group of them
"Many teenagers carry on being goths into their adult life, wearing toned-down clothes, having good jobs, a mortgage, a car and children."
- I don't know anyone who I could really call a goth above the age of like 30. I think they still like the music and maybe a bit of the clothing. But you won't recognize them on the street that quick as a goth person.
"They won't like me saying it, but their lifestyle, unlike the punk scene, is a middle-class subculture," she said.
- Some may not like it and love to be “dark weird persons”. But there are also a lot who are sick of being called Satanist or whatever else.
EDIT: Lol, and about the guys wearing makeup... there are really just a few of those... It's probably just because you notice those people way more... a lot of goth people actually look normal when you meet them on the streest, you won't notice them. And i agree... makeup is lame.
RE: Goth? Read here. by twentytwo on 04-06-2006 at 07:48 AM
Sure, because they look stupid and ugly ?
RE: Goth? Read here. by Patchou on 04-06-2006 at 07:53 AM
I was going to reply but MenthiX already said it all... don't think too much about stereotypes, all the goths I know are very nice and joyfull persons and they all dress a lot better than I do.

Meh I only dislike emo's and there The world owes me view.
Goths in my opinion are ok even though it not my sort of crowd.
Hip hop mixing with goth I don't think so......
RE: Goth? Read here. by Pyroteq on 04-06-2006 at 12:20 PM
Im not goth either but i have been called it, i do listen to similar music and i have goth friends... All goths i know are really nice by the way.
And also.. true 'goth' music is electronica and trance not heavy metal as most people presume.
"Goth" is a stereotype of depression and stuff but thier really on the whole, the opposite.
"The values of the goth subculture are very high-brow," she said. "They tend to enjoy old poetry, books and the arts.

Satanists are very different from what the sterotype is.. That they worship the devil and are anti-god.. sacrafice animals etc... But thats Anti-Chris. Satanists belive that the devil is the true god, and god is actually a fake..
Guys wearing makeup is more emo than goth.
RE: Goth? Read here. by Discrate on 04-06-2006 at 12:23 PM
I dont like goths. When i look at them i feel sick, i dont know why. Maybe because its the way they dress or all the black on them. And some of them go on about killing them selfs and stuff its just disturbing.
RE: Goth? Read here. by Pyroteq on 04-06-2006 at 12:35 PM
Its emos that go on about killing themselfs, Most goths are actually quite friendly and joyfull.
RE: Goth? Read here. by Discrate on 04-06-2006 at 12:37 PM
Well i know some goths that wanna kill them selfs.
RE: Goth? Read here. by FrozenDaggers on 04-06-2006 at 12:50 PM
Goth's always tend to start on me. I'm not sure why... maybe they dont wanna kill themselves, but others. Heh :-\
RE: Goth? Read here. by SikStyles on 04-06-2006 at 03:39 PM
I wear black all the time. Listen to morbid music. Like macabre art and stuff that others don't like. Like satanic verses. I am not a goth though. I don't label myself. I am just me. Anyway I would like people to respect goths more, as I have gothic friends, and people just put them off as weirdos. They are people too. Just people who are interested in different things.
RE: Goth? Read here. by Rik on 04-06-2006 at 03:53 PM
i know goths and most of them are nice people
i don't see why some people see them as freaks

RE: Goth? Read here. by paperless on 04-06-2006 at 05:44 PM
That clearly shows they are not different from the other people..Each person has different interests and i bet goth are not all the same if there is a group of goths where they are all the same then its because they are not being themselves..
So..what is a goth afterall? To me its people that like to wear black clothes..
bleh..
RE: Goth? Read here. by Plik on 04-06-2006 at 05:59 PM
Im not a big fan of goth culture, but if thats what they like then thats up to them, i think that they probably wouldn't like most of the things i do
RE: Goth? Read here. by aNILEator on 04-06-2006 at 06:04 PM
meh i have no idea what i am.
but love metal, rock, ska, punk, death metal etc
hate emo and droney "goth" shit like bauhaus or whatever
but yeah most of these 'goths' around ehre are pathetic drunkards who moan about how everything sucks and then drink some more (yes i do know because i used to hang out with them untill that's all they did all day everyday)
but i'd agree with most of that except the books and poetry part

I actully know several goths. ( im not one) I am always told that goths are always trying to kill them selves and they are big druggies. But i rathered have found out for my self. theres a goth in my class im am ''sorta'' friends with him and they are actully nice. I asked him why he is a goth and just says he wants to be different than everyone else instead of being a gangster or prep or skater. I now understand the concept of a goth. BTW i still listen to heavy metal and hard rock on the occasion

Eh... listening to hard rock and that doesn't make you goth at all ... I love hard rock... But really if I'd have to classify myself it would be a jock....
I dunno... we don't really have many goth people around here (small town).... The ones we have aren't all that goth anyways... they'll dress in black, have weird haircuts... all that... But then they're hyper as hell and don't shut up. None of them are really mopey at all like the typical stereotype....
I really have no problem with them... They are what they wanna be... That's fine with me... haha...

i actually hate the word goth.. it irritates me so.. just cos i like darker things.. and pretty black things.. o well... i believe that studies are stuck in the stereotypes.. i bet you they were chavs!... o well.. also paler skined people look healthier if they wear darker colours.. i personally look ill if i wear alot of white.
RE: Goth? Read here. by Negro_Joe on 04-08-2006 at 11:47 PM
I think the main problem is the word "Goth", meh seems dark, satanic. that name automaticaly brings to mind over-exagerated stereotypical goths, made famous by the media...
RE: Goth? Read here. by Voldemort on 04-09-2006 at 02:17 AM
It think there is nothing wrong with them, we are all different.

RE: Goth? Read here. by Purity on 04-09-2006 at 07:43 AM
The way I see, you pretty much have to label some one, to explain about what group of people you're talking about, to explain who you're talkign about.
I don't like labels, I think it's retarded placing yourself into a group. Like, I'm myself, whatever style I may appear to be, so be it. People can call me whatever they want I don't care. Trends bother me. I don't like doing stuff because it's popular, I honestly prefer to be different.
Also bothers me the fact people hate the whole emo or goth trends, or actually and trend. Why do people just hate someone once they call themselves emo or something? Me knowing someone is emo isn't gonna make me think any different about someone, I'm saying this about the whole emo thing, because it's the trend that's being bashed the most, by people who are judgemental and such. People need to learn how to know someone, before they can hate them.
This whole slitting wrists thing is kinda tedious to approach. There are the people that will do it, for attention, to be noticed, or to fit in, whatever. Then there is the ones that do it because they may enjoy the pain, it may actually make them feel better, because of subtle depression, or whatever. We don't know what they are going through, weather it's family issues, or issues with friends, the ones that don't do that stuff, are just sorta blinded, and yet most of us will say "It's so stupid" To me, it really is stupid. I've gotten really depressed in my life, the past 4 months have been so depressing. I don't cut myself or anything. It's pointless cutting yourself or suicide, it's selfish. Anyways, the main point I was trying to get at there was people shouldn't think that ALL emo's are wrist cutting depressed fools. I've probably only met one or two people that do it, and are trendy. The rest are just plain style, the clothes the music, the jewlery.
People will label others, it's normal, it's just the way it is. It will always be that way. May sound like I'm contradicting a little bit, hopefully you understand where I'm coming from.
I have the same to say about goths, Their not all satanic weirdo's. Majority is just trendyness.
RE: Goth? Read here. by hypedupmonkey on 04-09-2006 at 08:49 AM
Has anyone noticed that most of the references and opinions on that survery such as liking poetry and art refer "Goths" **shudders** (I hate labels!!!) back to British Victorian ages when "Gothic" first appeared? You'll see many "Goths" wearing corsets and frilly long skirts, its just a revival of the old gothic culture.
I have black hair, listen to metal, wear black and such but I am what I am...me and no-one can say otherwise
