prior to a fresh installation of xp MIDI files played happily however since the installation they will not play.. any ideas why this cud be?

Have you reinstalled your sound card successfully since installing XP again? You need the sound card to be installed so as your general MIDI sound set can be used to play MIDI files.

Install the software for the audio hardware (not just drivers), especially if you have onboard sound.
