ok im gonna install linux SUSE and i want to know if it is possible to install on the same HD as windows is i was gonna but saw something about format and decided to ask first.. if not how do i create a partition for it.

RE: installing SUSE Q by Adeptus on 04-26-2006 at 09:15 PM

You can.  What will happen is it will resize your Windows partition to make unallocated space on the drive, then create Linux partitions.  The YaST installer of SuSE 9.0 and later (if you have an earlier version then you shouldn't use it, as it would be quite obsolete) can do this during installation.

For best results, defragment your Windows partition before you begin.

so my windows wont be affected? and after installation i could choose wich OS to start up with?

RE: installing SUSE Q by Adeptus on 04-26-2006 at 09:29 PM

Correct.  Your Windows partition will be reduced by whatever amount you choose to give to SuSE, but it will all be there and you will be able to select which OS to boot.

Provided nothing goes wrong, of course.  :P

The usual warnings apply.  This would be a good time to back up that really important stuff, make sure you know where your Windows CD is in the unlikely event you need it -- and so forth.

If you can't find an uninstall method, this will work.

See if you can use SUSE to remove SUSE from the boot options. Then delete all the SUSE partitions.

If you couldn't remove SUSE from the boot options, reinstalling Windows will fix it.

Try this method if you can't find a better uninstallation.

Yast is the software Add/Remove manager .. i think the software updater there trialing is Yum

Awww crap. I'm getting 10.0. I'm getting it unofficially. I've been to the website a bunch of times, but it's too hard to navigate. Another website had it just there so I've snatched it. It's for my old computer anyway.

Is there a patch from 10.0 to 10.1?
RE: installing/unistalling SUSE 10.0 by Hank on 04-29-2006 at 11:59 AM

you can still download updates in 10.0 ..they still have updates for 9.0 up to 10.0 an will have for 10.1 for awhile.

The computer that I'll be installing on has no network. Is there a 10.0 to 10.1 patch that I can download?

RE: installing/unistalling SUSE 10.0 by Hank on 04-30-2006 at 12:38 AM

has no network, that shouldnt be a problem, there are others you can download that are made for 10.0 . just use Yast to update . unless Yum is in 10.0 use that. to learn how to use yum. go to ur xterm an type in man yum
