New WLM build by sufcste on 05-03-2006 at 08:16 AM

Windows Live Messenger Build 8.0.0689.00_Branches (Beta) has been publicly released. Although it is *sighs* still a Beta, the official blog (here) says that not much will change between this version and the final (unless they find any major flaws). What I hope this means is that when it IS released as a final, Messenger Plus! Live 4.0 will be able to be released very shortly afterwards.

The new Beta is a bit different from previous ones, but I don't think WLM 8 is that far removed from MSN Messenger 7.5.

Please reply to let me know what you think, and if it is as buggy as the last version.

RE: New WLM build by Hank on 05-03-2006 at 08:23 AM

just as buggy an crappy IMO ..taking up to 50MB Memory. thats with the contact list Open , im sure its bound to get higher

RE: New WLM build by Dane on 05-03-2006 at 08:25 AM

Yeah, 75MB here with the contact list open., 82MB with the contact list and a chat open (1 chat)...

RE: New WLM build by Pyroteq on 05-03-2006 at 08:26 AM

Yeah mine takes up to about 50k mem when the chat list is open.. 20k otherwise.. and with chat windows it takes up even more..Thats pretty crap IMO, although the new interface looks nice and the colour scheme is better. I Still think its too cluttered but a-patch fixes that nicely. Thank god for ad-ons and patches.

Hello, I know you'll all think me really, really, really stupid, but I was just reading this thread and was wondering if I could try out the latest build too.  How do I do that?  and is there anything really bad I should know about it if I am going to try it?  You see my system is a little unstable at the moment anyway, still managable though.

Anyway, if someone could direct me as to downloading the latest build would be good.

Thanks.

RE: New WLM build by NiteMare on 05-03-2006 at 08:58 AM

they'd better get teh memory usage down soon or it won't be that popular

RE: New WLM build by Hank on 05-03-2006 at 08:58 AM

its a shame that Messenger is taking up so much memory, people will just go to programs like trillian once people see how much memory WLM8 uses,  which wont do patchou any good with MPL4 on the way, . the MSN team need to work on getting its Mem usage down

RE: New WLM build by Eddie on 05-03-2006 at 09:50 AM

Im hitting 33,000 kb memory usage :S Almost doubled from the previous public beta build (my computer anyway) :S I agree with the majority that the memory needs to be dropped, although i dont think it will drive users away.

i wouldnt be so sure of that. thats why many people use trillian an or other IM clients because of the Memory hog. not everyone has powerfull with a huge amount of memory in there system
RE: New WLM build by scifiswain on 05-03-2006 at 12:19 PM

Ok, I get what you're saying, but I'm already a tester, I did download it before, but I want the latest version.  I cant seem to find the link that takes me to download the latest version of WLM .... I only see that I am a tester, and when i'm not signed in it just wants me to sign up.  again I guess you'll all think im silly, but there we are.

Ah ok I found it now.  I wish theyd distinguish the different builds though, it looks exactly the same as the one i have, at least the filename does.

RE: New WLM build by Hank on 05-03-2006 at 12:30 PM

Direct downloads to Windows Live Messenger v8.0.0689 in all languages
(No need to login for the download, but you still need a "provisioned account" to sign in with. That means either an invite, being tester, being accepted on ideas.live.com or other methods of getting your account "provisioned")

RE: New WLM build by Schockwave on 05-03-2006 at 12:51 PM

Thank you for that as I could not get the page up to download. There website is down at present :D ;)

Much better than the previous beta version, and now have Windows live today, equivalent to MSN Live today, great!:D;)

RE: New WLM build by Felu on 05-03-2006 at 02:50 PM

Its same as 8.0.0683.00_branches. No changes at all.

RE: New WLM build by andrewdodd13 on 05-03-2006 at 03:34 PM

If I remember correctly, the MSN Beta versions had debugging features in them, which is most likely what is happening here. This makes it easier to find bugs, but makes memory usage get pretty high.
Hopefully in the release version they'll take these out, will probably cut a bit of memory overhead off it.

On the other hand, new features in this build from the last one I had (566 I think):

  • * New Sign in Sounds - Don't care for it much myself. When attempting to change these, there is now a built in options form for them, you don't have to open windows sounds.
    * New icons - makes it easier to distinguist online / offline contacts, and who is blocked.
    * The title bar of the contact list has changed colour.
    * When a contact sends you more than one message, it will no longer show their nick twice. Can be turned back on under the "Messages" tab.
    * A new option in "General": Show shadows and animations. Haven't seen it do anything yet.
    * You can now disable Custom Emoticons without disabling the built-in ones.
    * An option under "File Transfer" to install "Windows Live Safety Scanner". Sounds fancy.

There's probably more, but I haven't found a full list yet.

I think the main change is that it is a public beta! I'm not sure if .0683.00_Branches was actually meant to be released. I think this is the 3rd (and hopefully final) official Beta version.

Well, as far as I know, this is one of the last builds before the official release...so they should remove those debugging things ASAP to ensure the memory issue isnt caused by other things.

does this version require the stupid windows genuine advantage program installed in order to work?

i've heard so many annoying things with that so i refuse to download it! even though i have a genuine windows xp home edition

No, you don't need WGA installed for it to work.

I have however noticed that it randomly reboots my machine when I'm talking to certain contacts. I'd test it further, but it's not worth getting bad sectors over :s
RE: New WLM build by Terry_X on 05-04-2006 at 06:42 AM

i actually uninstalled and installed wlm 3 times until i realised in the options the show "contact says..." was unchecked :|

RE: New WLM build by user27089 on 05-04-2006 at 06:46 AM

I'm really not looking forward to testing this beta with Messenger Plus! Live.

That's what I was wondering, will they eventually start doing it so only users of Genuine Windows XP will be allowed to run it, as when my computer was bought, they didn't give me an official Windows XP, I couldn't afford a real Windows XP Pro, so I had to download it, and the key I used for it has been used about 10 times now, so it says it isn't real :s, but it is.
RE: New WLM build by Dane on 05-04-2006 at 08:55 AM

Just a quick note, I have tracked down the memory usage issue.  I dont even know how this is possible, but since ive done it my memory usage has been at 20MB for MSN with a contact window open.

I used NoRooms ListCleaner and removed all of the contacts that had deleted me from their list (there were about 80), all of the people I was allowing to see my status even though they werent on my list and I wasnt on theirs (omg, there was a lot, at least 160), and all the people im blocking that deleted me and I deleted them (about 60)....I then deleted all the Address Book Entries corresponding to these contacts...and Wallah, My Messenger Memory Usage is now down to 20MB with 1 chat window open...thats 60MB less than before I cleaned it.  Even if it is a matter of simply cleaning it, they obviously need to improve upon their skills, cause a lot of people with older accounts (like mine, from all the way back before I even started coming to this community) will have a ton of these dead entries and such.

I better do that. Iv'e had this email for... almost 9 years.

RE: New WLM build by Dane on 05-05-2006 at 01:11 AM

Just so you all know not to double submit, I am working with Ken from the WLM Team to get the strange "Large Lists High Memory" issue resolved. :).

RE: New WLM build by Trunten on 05-06-2006 at 05:13 AM

I gladly welcomed this build with open arms after seeing the previous leaked build ran fine for me with no problems. :D

I remember no matter what I tried, I couldn't use 562 or 566. But I still decided giving 683 a try. :) And it actually worked great for me, so I of course got 689 as well. (H)

I've had it for a few days now, and I've not had any problems yet. (Y)
