Desktop problem [FIXED] by YottabyteWizard on 05-09-2006 at 07:54 AM

Well, my computer just got infested of spyware/adware/malware. I won't go on details on how it got into my computer but now the problem is my desktop: now my icons aren't transparent!
I rebooted my computer, checked viruses, adware/malware/spyware and now it's supposed to be clean, but still can't fix it. Any thoughts?

If you use Windows XP-
Right-click on the Desktop>Arrange Icons By>Lock Desktop Icons/Web Items on Desktop. Untick the option to make them transparent.

This should solve your problem.

Edit: it is not called transparent.

transparent?, are they supposed to be?, what version of windows are you using?

Well if you are using somekind of tweak XP, that would be causing this problem.

I experienced once the same thing on of my pcs, and at that time, there was a tweak xp installed and it has modified the desktop icons.

regards

Desktop icons and icon labels may not display background transparency or the drop shadow effect in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP

quote:
When you try to display icons and icon labels that have a transparent background or a drop-shadow effect, the backgrounds of the icon and of the desktop text is the same as the background color that is set in the Advanced Appearance dialog box in Display Properties.

My guess: you have web content on your desktop

right click> properties
desktop tab
[customise desktop]
web tab
uncheck all items.
ok, ok, should be back to normal.

Please always search forums first ;)...

Actually rav0 already posted the correct proper (and complete) information incl. solution

---------------

The problem can be caused by two things. And the solution given by lizard.boy is only a part of the story. In fact, most stuff (not everything) said in this thread is correct. So it isn't a matter of their solutions not working and not being correct, as they will work and are actually correct, they are all just only a part of the story. As noted in the link previously posted by rav0, it depends on 2 things: 'Active Desktop' being enable or not, and/or 'Lock Web Items' being used or not...

Among the many threads created before about the exact same problem:
CookieRevised's reply to Dodgy White Square

There can also be a related problem: 'Active Desktop' will be automatically enabled if you use certain desktop background images:
CookieRevised's reply to Transparent Icons Help (also noted and linked to in the previous link)

So, the solution of lizard.boy might work for YottabyteWIzard's case, but might not for others.

;)
