PC running overnight by Rubber Stamp on 05-21-2006 at 05:27 PM

i want to download a big file from the net, which will take a lot of time on my internet connection. so i was thinking of starting the download and leave it running overnight. i want to ask if this will damage my computer in any way? i mean whether my pc can get overheated or something? is it safe?

As long as the computer has enough free space around it (ventilation) and the system inside is in good condition (free from dust etc) it should be fine, if it was to overheat most computers just shut down.

Well, your parents simply are wrong. If their only argument is that the computer will be damaged, you should try to provide some facts for them.
EDIT: Of course, something can happen, but that can as well happen when you have it turned on during the day.

My PC has been running straight for almost 6 weeks now without any interruption or reboot. I probably didn't even power this machine of fro like a half year. Just reboots when Windows Update needed it. And the power off was just to install some hardware.

Having PCs on all the time is fine, just remember it consumes power... power == money. That's the only real downside.

You should try and turn your computer off, and reduce your carbon footprint, but it wont make any difference what-so-ever, to how it runs. :P

I leave mine on all the time, I only ever restart it is for programs and if i dont need to then trust me i dont :P
My old pc was 6 years old and i left it runnign for 7months in a go and nothing happened. You could switch your monitor off to save that little bit of power though :P

Well, it runs all day doesn't it? What would happen at night? Ninjas come and turn it off?

RE: PC running overnight by zaher1988 on 05-21-2006 at 07:35 PM

I turn off my pc each 6 days once for only 12 hours

RE: PC running overnight by qgroessl on 05-21-2006 at 07:52 PM

Mine is on constantly... :p only time it's off is if the power goes out... or if it's being rebooted for whatever reason... I guess on occasion my parents will turn it off too... that's usually only if we'll be gone for a while on vacation or something.
