With the .mdf file you should also have a .mdf, you must mount both of these using Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools for it to work. I'm not exactly sure whether you can extract them, because the emulation dvds.

You need to create 2 virtual drives, and on one of those mount the .mds file and on the other mount the .mdf file.

You don't need to mount both, you only mount the .mds file.

Ok. I'll talk you through it:

Open Alcohol 120%
On the left under Options, click Virtual Drive
Number of Virtual Drives: 1
Check "Remount images upon system reboot"
Click OK
At the bottom of the screen you will see a drive tree.
There will be a catergory called "Virtual Drives"
Right click the drive and choose Mount Image
Choose the .mds file (or the .mdf, use Show All Files to be able to see it)
Click OK once you got the file
And you're done.
