Apologies if this has been discussed previously (and it probably has!)

When you're having an msn conversation and a bar pops up at the top of the window telling you 'so-and-so appears to have a webcam', is it always so?  This has happened a few times with various friends - yet some have denied even owning a cam ^o) :P :) :$ (A)

Messenger thinks any (or most) video sources are a "webcam".

For me, it is my TV tuner card -- not only would Messenger tell you I have a webcam (which I don't), but if we were to start a video conversation, you would see whatever is shown on the last TV channel I watched.

Messenger also recognizes another video capture device on my ATI Radeon graphics card -- which I seem to remember reading the card has, although I have never used it.

There is an option to not show presence of "webcams" to my contacts, which I have since then turned on, to keep people from bugging me about it.  :P

If it's a toss up between your friend or Messenger telling the truth, it's gotta be your friend.

You (and even the owner) could be completely unaware of  some such hardware being there.  It's not always in plain sight or intentionally installed: the second video device Messenger finds on my computer is no more than a mystery jack on the back of the graphics card (which happens to be a very popular card for gaming).

The point is you shouldn't assume people are lying.  There are many other possibilities.

Or maybe that's just a notice from microsoft partenership with Logitech to make you buy a webcam
