Hey,

How would I take a video file and edit particular frames, e.g. changing the original ones for images I have? Whilst keeping the soundtrack the same..

you can use a lot of programs, my favourite is Pinnacle Studio Plus 9(its very easy to use), or Windows Movie Maker

many do say that Adobe Premiere is the best, although having only used it a few times, I was left very confused on how the program works. However, Sony's Vegas Video is what I use and I have a great amount of control of how the video will look.
