ipod trouble by JadeRovo on 06-20-2006 at 08:03 PM

My friend is trying to put some tunes on her ipod from itunes. She has tried copying and pasting them and dragging them but nothing works. I think it is probobly locked but as I haven't got one I don't know how to direct her. Does anyone know how to unlock it or what the problem is if it is not the one I think. Also when she tries to click on songs from her ipod they are gray and shaded. Thanks (Y)

I'd start here:

ipods make things difficult on purpose.

you cannot use the drag and drop like you would add files to a removable harddrive, to add your songs. you MUST use a compatible program such as iTunes to copy your music to your device. and even when the songs are copied onto your iPod, you cannot open My Computer and click on the removable iPod icon and see your songs. It will look like nothing is there. you must use iTunes software, (another example is musicmatch) to view and add songs to an iPod.

on another note, you cannot take songs from an iPod and transfer them to a computer. (Say you wanted to go to your friends house and transfer some songs from your iPod to his computer, you cannot do that:P). Although there is 3rd party software out there that allows you to.

iTunes may be hard to set up but once you get the hang of it it's really easy from then on.

Unfortunately i don't know quite what the problem is as i've never encountered it, but you/she could start by checking the iPod preferences in iTunes:

Click here for screenshot (didn't want to stretch the page)

depends if she wants all the songs on there, i've never tried it on manual as i always want all my songs on my iPod, also i think making playlists of the songs you want on there would be easier than totally manual (and then set it to update certain playlists..)

(that screenshot is just a shot of what my iPod settings look like)

oh and try right clicking the iPod-tab-thing on the left, then click "update" (if it's not set to automatically update that should get the songs transfering)

also try reading all the manual etc. first, the iPod may need formatting before it can be used or something.

if nothing else works try getting me a few screenshots or something and i'll try and help from them.

it won't be that it's locked i don't think... cause i often update my iPod with the lock on (no reason, i just forget to take it off) and it works fine.

what type of iPod is it (4th Gen, 5th gen (video), mini, nano, etc.)?
