Does WLM or MsgPlus! Live have an option to display the contact's own display name in the contact list, but a nickname or something like that (which can be changed by myself) in the conversation window?

Not it doesn't unfortunately. Hopefully we'll see the nickname feature improved in future versions of Windows Live Messenger.
