(/showthread.php?tid=61673) Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Menthix on 06-26-2006 at 11:14 PM
I ddidn't want to bother Patchou with this by mail, but shouldn't msgplus.net redirect to msgpluslive.net so people actually end up on the new site? Right now users need to read the newspost and than click the link before they can discover the new site and Plus! Live. I can imagine quite a lot of users don't read the news and go directly to the download section (on msgplus.net) to see if there is a new version yet. RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by wj on 06-26-2006 at 11:19 PM I think the old site should be kept alive, but with a splash page on msgplus.net RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Guido on 06-26-2006 at 11:19 PM
I fully agree. It's very confusing for people to think Plus Live hasn't still be released because the site is still like that (millions of people don't visit these forums and not many notice the small news post saying "Messenger Plus! Live is PUBLIC" (and if they do, they probably click on Download instead of in that link). quote:Actually, such a thing is already on the site in its own special page: http://www.msgpluslive.net/download/old/ Perhaps only the help sections should be kept alive (features perhaps?) linked from msgpluslive.net/download/old/, with the others (www.msgplus.net/download.php, etc.) redirecting to msgpluslive.net. Nobody will want old banners, or old merchandise, I guess RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Chris4 on 06-26-2006 at 11:28 PM
I was thinking maybe on the msgplus.net site, two banners on an intro page, one to the MSN Messenger add-on (msgplus.net) "Messenger Plus!" and one to the Windows Live Messenger add-on (msgpluslive.net) "Messenger Plus! Live" and the user clicks whatever one they need RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Menthix on 06-26-2006 at 11:37 PM
I think splash pages and banners are only more confusing. RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by qgroessl on 06-26-2006 at 11:38 PM There should be splash pages on both.... whether you go to the live website or not, asking you which one you'd like to go to so that people can choose... Besides.... people are still using both.... a lot of people don't like WLM RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Menthix on 06-26-2006 at 11:39 PM
quote:That's exactly the reason of http://www.msgpluslive.net/download/old/ RE: RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by CookieRevised on 06-26-2006 at 11:40 PM
quote:I agree... the old pages should be left. there are thousands of posts on the forums relying on them for more information and as long there is 1 single person using Plus!3 they should be accessable. Big banner on main page to live-site would be very good though... RE: RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Guido on 06-26-2006 at 11:43 PM
quote:I agree with this. I'm afraid a banner/splash on msgplus.net asking people to choose between things whose difference they don't necessarily know can confuse many users. RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Menthix on 06-26-2006 at 11:47 PM
@ those who suggest the banner/splash method: RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Chris4 on 06-26-2006 at 11:52 PM
quote: But what if a user is looking for Messenger Plus! and they go to msgplus.net and suddenly redirected to msgpluslive.net ? They won't know what to download and may end up downloading Plus! Live by accident. That's if they don't read the compatibility bit. RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Patchou on 06-26-2006 at 11:56 PM
You should ask me before starting these long threads . RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by CookieRevised on 06-26-2006 at 11:57 PM
Maybe both (plus site and live site) should be redesigned so that on the Plus! site there is a banner listing both versions, but Plus! itself a bit bigger and on the live site vice versa, if you get what I mean. quote:What about all those posts linking to those help pages??? There are still many people using Plus!3 and what not... and they have the right to still get support too IMHO... Don't kill those help pages ! Maybe don't make them so accessable anymore (eg: from the site itself), but if a link in a forum post points to such a page (and there are a lot of such posts), that page should still be there. RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Menthix on 06-26-2006 at 11:59 PM Thanks for the info Patch Now that we're on the subject anyway... same story you just told counts for autoupdate? RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Guido on 06-27-2006 at 12:10 AM The thing is, just like MSN Messenger is being phased out by Microsoft (only left for Windows 98, etc.), Messenger Plus! will inevitably be replaced. When MP3 stopped being compatible with old MSN Messenger versions many complained, but eventually the people who didn't upgrade were well under 1%º. RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by CookieRevised on 06-27-2006 at 12:16 AM
quote:very true, but: 1) it's a bitch that old info pages on messenger aren't accessable anymore. 2) when MP3 stopped supporting old messengers, iinformation on MP3 wasn't pruned, so it's not the same 3) we are still a long way from the fact that everybody will have Windows XP, WLM and only Plus! Live. Don't get me wrong, everything does evolve. But the issue is information/help/support pages... It isn't good to simply prune existing information while many people still depend on that information. Prune it when nobody needs it anymore, not in the middle (or even at the beginning) of a shift... RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Guido on 06-27-2006 at 12:20 AM
quote:Just to clarify, I agree with keeping the help pages. I'd say redirecting index.php and download.php to the new website is enough (keeping the rest in a corner of the new server, shouldn't take much visits or load). quote:That's what HTTP reply code 301 is for RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Patchou on 06-27-2006 at 01:58 AM bha.. if it makes you happy, I'll keep some of the old help pages on the old server RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Val on 06-27-2006 at 02:20 AM
quote: Why not just copy all the help pages to msgpluslive.net and then do some .htaccess editing so that when someone trys to access the old help files it redirects to the ones at msgpluslive.net? RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Guido on 06-27-2006 at 05:13 PM
quote:Now that I think of it (besides being too much hassle for an old version ) it might be confusing for old, outdated help to be within the new design of the site... although it would be more coherent. (to have msgpluslive.net/download/old/help/faq/ etc.) RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Sunshine on 07-10-2006 at 12:50 PM
Just came across a post that made me want to bump this thread up: Messenger Plus on Windows Live Messenger. RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Guido on 07-10-2006 at 06:40 PM
quote:* Guido agrees RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Menthix on 07-10-2006 at 07:44 PM If you redirect http://msgplus.net/, then also redirect http://msgplus.net/download.php. Because a lot of external sites seem to link directly to the download page. RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Salem on 07-10-2006 at 09:17 PM
quote: Maybe for a download page you could have a script to detect whether a user is using Pre-XP, and if so automatically install MsgPlus! 3.6x when trying to install? Maybe the same for any online documentation? Not sure how well this will work, so is just a thought. ~Salem RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Menthix on 07-10-2006 at 09:44 PM No, People can have Windows XP and still want to use MSN 7.5 + Plus! 3.xx... that's their choice. RE: RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Salem on 07-11-2006 at 07:52 AM
quote: Yeh, true, you have a point there. Didn't even think about that ~Salem RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Nagamasa on 07-11-2006 at 12:09 PM Wouldnt it be better if the the wording for the entire Help section be kept the same, and the section to be moved to http://www.msgpluslive.net and to have the new website's template? RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by davidb92 on 07-16-2006 at 06:58 PM Everyone should be using WLM by now anyway, people who aren't should be upgraded (like a plus-style "There is a new version" window) to WLM. And I think you should just delete the old site. RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by Thor on 07-16-2006 at 07:04 PM
quote:Yes, I agree, but those pages should still be on the msgpluslive.net site, and not the old. It could just be a little notice on the download page.. RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by CookieRevised on 07-16-2006 at 07:09 PM
quote:1) Not everybody is able to run WLM! WLM is made for XP, not everybody has XP. 2) Deleting the old site is no good as it contains FAQs and help pages which are still used and linked to a lot via these forums. RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by davidb92 on 07-16-2006 at 07:10 PM They're not? Completely ignore my last post then... quote: Belive it or not, I advirtised WLM way since Feburary to all 95 students in my grade, and only about 15 are using WLM. And even fewer have MP!L. RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by CookieRevised on 07-17-2006 at 05:17 AM
I see the site for Plus!3 is being redirected now.... quote: RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by haydos on 07-17-2006 at 05:22 AM
As Patchou posted in his 4.01 release thread, these pages are at RE: Redirect msgplus.net to msgpluslive.net ? by CookieRevised on 07-17-2006 at 05:26 AM
quote:Yep, I know, but that's not the issue... as stated in many posts here, the issue is redirection, not relocation. It is exactly because of what has been posted in his 4.01 release thread that I posted the question/bumped this thread, so: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I see the site for Plus!3 is being redirected now.... but all the help pages and stuff are not! Can these be redirected to their proper new locations too: quote: |
