As you may already know, Mattias and I have been working Screenshot Sender 5.0 for quite a long time now. (Way too long actually...) Last year, we threw the first public beta version in the wild but after that, development slacked down again. We were determined to finish the script this summer and now we can say that we're close to the final release. We're both excited to announce that release candidate 1 is available for use and translating!

• New ways to capture screenshots.
  Now you can also take screenshots by clicking on the window or selecting the window by its title.
  
• A brand new design.
  The screenshot viewer and preview windows have a unique ribbon interface which provide a much better user experience. Make sure you check it out, they're sexy.
  For easier configuration, the preferences window has a breadcrumb navigation to quickly move between panels.
  We even threw in a new logo at no additional cost!
  
• Leaner and meaner code.
  Almost all code has been rewritten in one way or another, resulting in the fastest version of Screenshot Sender to date.

• Aero glass frames around windows cannot be properly captured for window-oriented screenshots.
  The Windows GDI dates from the pre-Vista era and doesn't play well with the Aero effects. Not much we can do about this.

Yeah but there is no way tu "intercept" this transfert and put it in the SS window ? There was a plug-in for MsgPlus 3 which did that ... so maybe there is a way to do this !?!

As everyone sits paitently waiting for Screenshot Sender 4 I decided that I would leave Notepad++ alone for a few minutes and update everyone on its status.

After coding for 10hours today I seem to have a stable bug free version. Most of the time today was spent with Sunshine debugging and finding out why some things were happening. Now I know I said hopefully by today it would be released but its unrealistic for that to happen. There is still one system that needs to be fully designed to support everyone out there. Thats right although the features are bug free we still want to be able to provide it to you in your favourite language. Now I strongly urge people to PM me with the language you wish to translate (please put this in the subject line) and the email address you would like the translation file sent to.

We already have translators for the following languages:

• English
  
• French
  
• Spanish
  
• Dutch

yes please thats what i mainly used it for. You print screen nething and just send what you just captured

So, where are 5 days later and no news from developpers ... When will be the release ?

Working on the translation system. We had an issue with being able to set the text of the sidebar panel but that has been resolved. And if we can we are going to try and add one more command.

Idea : A picture visualizor with all screenshots, and we can select a picture to send.

Sorry for my english, i don't know how to explain my idea but i think you'll understand what i said... ^^'

No time is set yet because there is something wrong with the server and I have to email Dempsey about it. The only language included will be English but once everything is sorted out on the server ended you will be able to download any language available from the website .

• Browsing for a new directory doesn't include a trailing \ causing the filename to take on the foldername it should be in. Will be fixed in next release.
  
• !time or !time24 both return undefined. Will be fixed in next release.
  
• Clicking Apply or Ok will sometimes change the language on you. Will be fixed in next release.
  
• Preview send window doesn't close and gives an unknown error on line 9 (not sure of preview save). Will be fixed in next release.

So finally i can update SS4 from beta to the public one I love this script

A few problems I encountered?:

1. Using filename format: !email_ss_!#
Resulted in the following filename:
Screenshot%20Sendermyemail@hotmail.com_ss_2.png

Screenshot Sender is the name of the directory I am saving the images to, yet it is being prefixed onto the filename

2. Using /ssactive to send the active window to a contact generates the preview window, I click send, it uploads (successfully to a subdir called 'ss', albeit with wrong filename due to the above).

The following URL is sent to the recipient of the screenshot:
http://mydomain.com/ss/Screenshot Sendermyemail@hotmail.com_ss_2.png

As you can see the URL is both broken, and wrong (being prefixed again with Screenshot Sender).

3. Despite clicking send (then file uploads) and the recipient accepts, the preview window remains open.

I have some problems when I want to translate it to Dutch:

• In the FTP Upload section, when I change "Password:" to "Wachtwoord:", it's too long and gets cut off. Maybe you should make the labels longer?
  
• Also in FTP Upload, when I change "Directory:" to "Map:", it's placed very much to the left. Wouldn't it be better to add an right align property to the labels, since it looks like that's what you wanted in the English version?
  
• Where is the Messages.SaveFileText for? (translation file)

• Let the translation file change the window titles. I think it's very easy to do by modifying the XML files like it's already done for the window elements (yes I checked your code ), so this can be easily added in.

Have you changed your language? to something other then English? If so try removing the script and readding it and leave it at English. All language issues are going to be addressed with the next release.

Ok go to your preferences of Messenger Plus! goto Scripts > Highlight Screenshot Sender 4 click Remove.

Goto C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! Live\Scripts (make sure Screenshot Sender 4 folder has been deleted if not delete the folder.)

Redownload the plsc and install it. Let me know if you get the same error.

Clear your cache and try redownloading it.  Something may have gone wrong when you downloaded it the first time and you're just getting it out of your cache now.

For those having similar problems as cow07 was please download this exe it will install the scripting runtimes for the Microsoft Scripting Runtime which should solve the problem.

I'v made an italian translation for Screenshot Sender 4. If somebody need an italian translation for someone script, my msn contact is whilin at hotmail dot it.  Bye!

I request that people do not post translations for now. We have a few that have been submitted however we are having a lot of issues with the language system so when we release the next version the languages will be available.

Bugs that have been fixed

• Browsing for a new directory doesn't include a trailing \ causing the filename to take on the foldername it should be in
  
• !time or !time24 both return undefined
  
• Preview send window doesn't close and gives an unknown error on line 9

• Preferences changing language when applying settings
  
• Entire Language system
  
• Using the screenshot viewer (I sent a screenshot to one person, but it sent it to the wrong one.)

In a conversation window you can use the following commands:
/ssactive       (Sends active window)
/ssfullscreen   (Sends fullscreen)
/sssave         (Save active window)
/sssave2        (Save fullscreen)
(The above 2 have been changed in the version we are working on now.)
/ssconfig       (Opens Preferences)
/ssviewer       (Opens Screenshot Viewer)
/ssrecent       (Shows recent images taken to be sent)
/ssopendir      (Opens save directory)

All of these options are also available through the Plus! menu icon in the Conversation Window or through the Plus! menu on the contactlist window.

Well, i've upgraded to Live and Messenger Plus 4.something just now and i added the SS4 plugin. It succesfully installed and i can send SS's via the /commands but there is no Screenshot Sender 4 plugin "tab" in the Plus! drop down menu in the conversation window. It does appear in the main MSN window, just not in chat windows.

Script commands don't appear in that top menu anymore, they appear in the menu on the formatting toolbar.

oh, I see, thanks for the quick reply though, your script is really great, it helps a lot mostly on computers technical support, it makes it easier than first capture the screen, open a image program and paste it to save it as a image and then browse in the msn send file window to find it and send it

It's a good old simple crash, with Windows error reporting invoked in my case.

& I have Messpatch (for a number of changes) and A-Patch (just to remove JohnDoe says: thing.) Had them with the old versions too, everything OK then, of course.

I am sure this is caused because of a call we made to a Non stdcall API. This should be changed in the next version.

What exactly are you doing when it crashes tho? Just telling us it crashes is not enough information.

It happens when I try to send a snapshot of the active window. The preview window doesn't get to appear, the crash occurs when the counter gets to 0.

Okay so I have to admit I have been getting quite annoyed with people reporting the exact same bugs that we are aware of. So what did I do? I released version 4.0.01 which address only the bugs (except language issues). We will release an update which will be labeled 4.1.00.

Hey Mattie, I'm having the same problem as hubbie. The old version of Screenshot Sender crashed WLM upon trying to send screenshots, and so does the new one. I should mention that I completely removed the old version's folder before installing the new version.

I've used this script for quite some time now and I think it's one of the best and most useful scripts out there. So props to the devs
I have a suggestion though, and I think it's not that hard to implement.
I'd like an option to put the Delete and Upload buttons in the Preview Window, or maybe to show the Screenshot Viewer instead with the new screenshot selected of course.

EDIT: fixed. my bad. i had to change the folder path before it actually took on the changes. before that it was still saving in the folder before. but once i changed the folder path in setting and pressed apply, it fixed it.


also, in about it says i have version 4.0.00. is that normal, or should i see 4.0.01?

something else that could be improved is the screenshot viewer. you have to click on each file-name for it to load that screenshot. it would be nice if i could just use up and down arrows to quickly browse the screenshots. if you know what i mean.

Do you have GDI+ installed?

If you don't have the GDI+ DLLs in System32 directory, try downloading.

Hotkeys are not ploygamy compatible. Check tonight or tomorrow for an update.

With this update there will be an automatic update feature added where the script will check for updates once every sunday.

The next major release when complete will have the following features added.

If you are wondering why there hasn't been an update yet this is the reason. I was trying to install Vista a few nights ago but didn't realize my cd was scratched to shit. So I had to reinstall Media Center 2006 from the Acer recovery *shudders* and my girlfriend was downloading music so I was unable to download WLM or Plus! or even Notepad++ haha.

Update, well I am still OSless. I tried to burn Vista again (burned fine) and tried to install it and at 83% it gives me 80070017 Cannot copy file to local hard disk. Only info I can find is that I used a -R disk and cannot read fast enough, only solution (yet to try it) is to copy the files to the harddisk and install from there. I have to creat a Ghost Boot CD so I can easily put back on the image I have... lets hope all goes well tonight! I will keep everyone updated.

i have changed all 'if' clausole in explicit conditions:

I appologize for the delay. I have actually been on a recoding spree and as a result I broke some things and had to fix them.

Hence the delay.

So progress report is as follows

1. Recoding (Almost complete)
   
2. Added ability to reset counter
   
3. Added auto update check (will have user preferences)
   
4. Overlay Text GUI is complete (may not be added till next major release)
   
5. Webcam detection has been coded as well(may not be added till next major release)
   
6. Fixed Hotkey confusion with Alt and Shifts (Thanks Dane)
   
7. Fixed Polygamy hotkeys, keys were originally registered with the same identifier.

I have a bug and im not sure whats causing it, im using 4.1.01b

Each time i go to capture a window or desktop, it will bring up the preview (in the case of send. In the case of a capture and save, it just captures and brings up the save-as, then the preview

I have all the options on the preference screen unchecked and my save to path is on a directory on d:\

Also you cant set the directory as the root of a drive, ie d:\ since it automatically puts a second trailing slash

I had a previous version before i formatted which worked fine, i cant remember what version it was though

- Send/Save selected area doesn’t work like it should.

Whenever I choose send/save selected area, the brightness of my entire screen goes up and my mouse cursor stays normal, instead of the precision cursor you might expect. While the brightness of the screen is still high I can drag mouse to select an area, but because of the high brightness I can hardly see the lines around the selected area. After having an area selected the script hangs for a few seconds and then comes up with the preview window. However, the preview window never seems to show what I actually selected. Most of the time the preview window is empty, other times it just show another part of my screen than what I selected. HOWEVER, the preview window fails, but the actual saved file DOES show the area I selected with the proper brightness.

Sunshine pointed this out to me. Sometimes what you see in the preview window is the previous screenshot instead of the one you just captured. Confirmed by both Sun and me on Send Selected Area, but could be on fullscreen/active window and such too.

There is a problem with the script, when I try to delete a screenshot it only returns an error saying the file may be in use.

Even if this is an old screenshot from a days ago that I'm not even used, also the script supposedly has the option to delete the screenshot when signing off the WLM but it isn't deleting them.

the only way to delete the screenshot is closing fully the WLM and going to the folder and delete the screenshot

Hopefully this will get fixed in a future version

maybe this hint can help you, using the program process explorer, the program that is locking the screenshots from getting deleted is the WLM itself, I mean the msnmsgr.exe process. since the messenger plus doesn't creates an individual process to run due to that it nows integrates itself to the WLM that may be the cause the script can't delete the screenshots or that we can't delete them normally by going to the folder they are while the WLM is running for that matter

Non taken and yeah it doesn't makes any sense, but well I'm sure it can be solved, I doubt it can be impossible to solve

I want to suggest a little change about the saving of the preferences. I think it's better to use the UserId instead of the Email address. Also the folder where the images are stored by default should be named after the userid instead of the email address.

This can be simply done by changing two lines.

dunno was months ago, easier for me to use ALT+prnt screen then paste in convo it saves it automatically to temp directory with some f**k ass name like 8ytd984kd.jpg

Hi. This is the most useful script I have found for live plus.

However, I'm having same problem as previous "user" (roflmao456) has mentioned.

Someone sent me a screenshot of active window and I could see about 20 extra pixels above the active window that was supposed to be sent.

I tried sending someone a screenshot of active window and got same results.

Then I tried doing a "send selected area" and when I tried to drag the selected area, the selection began about 20 pixels above the point I actually started from. Selection remained about 20 pixels above my cursor while I was dragging the mouse and it finished about 20 pixels above the point I stopped the selection.

I had one other major problem with "save selected area". When I chose this option through script menu, immediately I got the "Save as..." explorer window askingme to choose the location I want to save the screenshot. If I type a file name here, and click "save", nothing happens. The window closes and it doesn't give me a chance to make a selection that I want to save. There is no saved file of any kind either that I named in the "save as" window.

I'm using Vista 32bit.

I m runnning on a Vista- pc, messenger  "v8.5.1302.1018" en "msg plus v4.60.0.324" (prev version, same issu)

I've installed the script: "Screenshot Sender 4.1.01b"

The script works fine: no problms to take screenshots en send them to my contacts, each screenshot is saved onto the path: "C:\Users\Xxxxx\AppData\Roaming\Screenshot Sender\XXXXXXXXXXX@mail.com\"

But when I reboot my computer or close the messenger(complete closing), the screenshot-dir is empty! So al my saved screenshots dissappeared...

When I 'sign-out' and login again, without closing messenger. My screenshots are still there!

Is this a know issue or Bug?

What can i do about it?

The title of the thread was just never updated. The current version is 4.1.1b but that was only available through the Plus! Installer (it never seemed to make its way to the update server or Script DB hence I guess has been lost. Which isn't a big problem.

Please, can you add the option so no pop up option appears when sending clipboard images???

everytime I send a clipboard image it opens a pop up asking me to accept the sending...

It has been quite some time since anyone has heard of any development news surrounding Screenshot Sender. Well I decided today against my better judgment to release some information and a teaser image with news surrounding the current development of the upcoming version.

So what can you expect to see when the software is released?

Well this is a good question and here is a list of expectations. Any bolded features are new

Ah, good to hear something from you matty! I was already worrying that you'd never let the world know what you're working on.

I do have to inform you all that the preferences panel isn't functioning yet. Matty asked me to integrate the new windows to work in the script so he can focus on the actual features, but I haven't found time yet to start working on that. The screenshot you see is quite complete, so I think you can expect to see that in a public release. I'm personally not fully happy with some of the other different panels, so I think those will still change. But because you haven't seen those yet... you won't even know! Oh yeh, if you haven't noticed yet: we're going for the Tango icon style!

An interesting thing is that we're aiming for perfect RTL support in the interfaces. In the progress of doing this, we already found some problems with Plus! Live itself. To give an example: the navigation buttons you see in the screenshot are ButtonControls with the StandardLook template "Transparent2". This is exactly the same as "Transparent", but that one has some positioning problems in RTL which "Transparent2" doesn't have. Very strange indeed, but that's just to give you an idea of how weird it is to get RTL working properly.

Anyway, I'm still on holidays at Madeira until the 11th of August, from then there are twenty more days of summer holidays which I can use to get the Screenshot Sender 5 interfaces working.

Full support for multiple monitors was something we wanted to fix. It never fully worked correctly. Since then has been fixed

Well the script has been going through a complete overhaul and is almost complete. I can not just release this version because a few things are yet to be coded.

For instance, the new Boolean thing - it's just doesn't work.

Because of that the session screenshots being deleted even though its turned off in the settings.

It has been completely recoded from scratch so no you wont see this problem.

A lot of effort has gone into this on my behalf to make this the best update ever for Screenshot Sender 5. I could have released it with the features it had previously but decided to hold off and finish the new features I did want to add. Such as the Overlay Text feature.

Please have paitence with me as this takes a bit for one person to code when they have limited time available. Once all coding is finished the GUI will be updated across the script then will go through beta testing/translation stage. Once that is complete you will have your update .

is it possible to further compress the size of png images?
a similar printscreen shot in ms paint saved as png produced a much smaller size compared to the one generated by SS4.

200kb(SS4) vs 48kb (paint)

I will see what I can do. I have read that saving it to a Stream then writing it to a file significantly reduces the size but I will have to see.

Just some updates.

Matti has joined the development team to help speed up the process. After looking over the code the majority of features have been completed it is only a matter of time.

Once the features are completed the entire script is going to get a UI make over. And then it is on to beta testing and translation. As for beta testing I was considering using the Plus! testers but we will see when the time comes.

I have compiled a to do list which this evening I am going to see if I can't knock some of it off. There isn't a lot to be honest. Here is what we are looking at.

1.    complete overlay text features (add/edit/delete and writing to the images[done but not implemented])
2.    add functions to registry.js for reading/writing hidden registry keys
3.    timer.js - complete function if saving image
4.    something with contact selector... no idea what though i dont remember will have to test
5.    new ui
6.    complete commenting

As you can see the last two are esthetically pleasing. The first 4 wont take much work. Like I said not much longer.

Perhaps a small disclaimer: most of the features in this first public beta should work fine, but not all of them are finished yet. Here are some remarks we'd like to make about this release:

• Window by Title isn't active yet.
  You can select a window from the list, but the Select button doesn't do anything as for now.
  
• Aero Glass may not be captured properly in the screenshots.
  Full Screen and Select Area screenshots can capture Glass, but window screenshots may have Aero Basic window borders and black toolbar backgrounds. • The design is not final yet.

Monitor 1: Correct Resolution (Black Screen)
Monitor 2: Displaying 1680x1050 Monitor (Monitor 3 - Main)
Monitor 3: Displaying Monitor 1


1 - Left (1440x900)
2 - Middle (Main - 1680x1050)
3 - Right (1280x1024)

Opening the window again while the first instance is still open creates duplicates.

Could you provide us with some extra information? How exactly are you trying to use it? Does the script debugger say anything unusual?

After you select Point-Click-Capture from the script menu or send the /sspcc or /ssspcc command, you should just click on the window on the screen to capture it. (The mechanic behind it is a full-screen window with very low opacity being opened which captures the click position and then finds the window where the click was in.)

Woohoo! I'm so exited to see a new version. I've been addicted to v4 for so long unfortunately it was buggy on W7.
Testing now v5, so far I'm impressed. A few minor quirks here and there, but nothing major.

The first quirk I noticed is when you add hotkeys, the second hotkey will get double in the list of available actions, third hotkey will get tripple and so on. Other words every time a window for new hotkey is opened a list of available actions is being appended to the previous list.
The fix is simple:

You replied faster then I could add more to my previous post :

• There is seems to be a problem with multi monitor setups. I use these monitor settings:
  
  Both monitors have the same resolution, the second monitor is on left.
  SS5 counter is displayed on the second monitor (IMO it's a little inconvenience) and only bottom half of it is visible, the top half is above the top edge of the screen.
  
  But the weirdest effect I get is when capturing fullscreen:
  
  
  It captures both screens with over then double size in height (3200x2800, supposed actual size: 3200x1200)
  [EDIT]after I made that screenshot I realized that I had second monitor shifted 1 pixel down in the settings (see first screenshot above) that explains why counter gets cut off. Even after I fixed the display settings, it fixed the counter, but finale size still 3200x2800. Restarting WLM  didn't help.[/EDIT]
  
  
• What does "Register the print screen key as a hotkey" do? I don't see any changes when it's selected or not...
  
  
• Also, it might be a good idea to check if selected hotkey is already in use and give user a choice to proceed or not?

There was a bug in the gdip class I wrote.

In the CaptureWindow_Fullscreen function the SystemArea.Top and SystemArea.Left are in the wrong order. Should be Left then Top not Top then Left.

Registry print screen key should allow you to use the (alt)+print screen key on your keyboard and it will then capture the image and open up the preview window.

Hotkeys cannot be used if they are already registered. Therefore you wont be able to set an already in use hotkey in the script. Only way a collision could occur is if the script isn't running when you assign the same hotkey. At that point when we load up we will warn the user that the hotkey is in use.

I like the idea. We could simply add some text in the window that says what function they are using.

The ability to change the type is available in the viewer but not yet in the preview window. These windows are going to be getting a complete overhaul which could see this being made available.

I want to add Window Position remembering so why not last folder. Not much code for that one.

As you may already know, Mattias and I have been working Screenshot Sender 5.0 for quite a long time now. (Way too long actually...) Last year, we threw the first public beta version in the wild but after that, development slacked down again. We were determined to finish the script this summer and now we can say that we're close to the final release. We're both excited to announce that the second public beta version is ready for testing!

We're getting very close to the final release of Screenshot Sender 5.0. Today, we're pushing out the first release candidate and we're marking the script ready for translation.

• Download and install Plus! XML Translator 0.3.008.
  
• Open Screenshot Sender's script directory (usually this is "C:\Program Files\Yuna Software\Messenger Plus!\WLM-Scripts\Screenshot Sender").
  
• Navigate to Languages > Translators and copy "empty.xml" (the empty translation file)
  
• Paste a copy of that file in the Languages folder. Rename it to match the language code of your translation (e.g. "fr.xml" for French). This will be your translation file.
  
• Open the script menu and choose Plus! XML Translator > Start translating.
  
  
  
• Select the English translation from the Languages folder as original file.
  
• Select your translation file from that same folder as translated file.
  
• Select "profile.xml" from Languages > Translators as translation profile. This file contains all the information Plus! XML Translator needs to validate your translation and provide you with useful comments for each translation node.
  
• Navigate through the tree view at the left to select a translation node. The original and translated version will appear at the right. This is where you can do the actual translating.
  
• When you want to save your work, click Save. If you want to automatically save every changed node, check Auto-save.
  
• The file paths are remembered when you close and reopen the window so you don't always have to reselect the files.

(Yeah, I know it's big AND ugly, but that's how we call it in Portguese )

Just as a suggestion, I don't think that 2nd separator is needed on the ribbon (and the same thing on the preview window). I mean, there's nothing on the right side to be separated from.

Apart of that, the Portuguese translation is done.

Downloading... I will see if I can check Spanish translation in my free time...

• Grab the updated translation profile attached to this post and overwrite the old profile.
  
• Get the updated English translation through Preferences > Language > Download Languages.
  
• If you already started translating:
  
  • Open Plus! XML Translator as normally, with the updated English translation and translation profile. When the new profile is loaded, it should add a "Columns: Languages" group to "Window: PrefLanguageDownload" and mark it as "needing translation". Simply translate the two missing entries and save it.
• If you have yet to start translating:
  
  • Get the updated empty translation through Preferences > Language > Download Languages. It will be downloaded to Screenshot Sender > Languages.
    
  • Make a copy of the empty translation and rename it to match the language code of your translation.
    
  • Follow the instructions in the previous post to start translating.

Hello.
Acording to tags help popup the tags are a set of specific characters followed after "!". A common sense would suggest that each tag must be separate from each other, i.e.
my_screenshot_!yyyy!MM!dd_!HH!mm!ss
Unfortunately it's not correct, because current regexp will ignore every second tag followed after previous one, so the example above will produce:
my_screenshot_2011!MM01_!HH46!ss
The help popup also doesn't mention that the tags can be combined into one like so:
my_screenshot_!yyyyMMdd_!HHmmss
but still the result is not what expected:
my_screenshot_20111001_!HHmmss
