Send your messages out to the people of the year 50,008! by Jurassic_Ice on 08-21-2006 at 04:42 PM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KEO

The KEO satellite is a satellite space time capsule which will be launched in the end of year 2007 or 2008 carrying messages from the citizens of present Earth to humanity 50,000 years from now, when the satellite orbiting Earth will return. This project is supported by UNESCO (who voted it Project of the 21st Century), Hutchison Whampoa and the European Space Agency, among other institutions.

Every person is invited to write a message addressed to the future inhabitants — the deadline is December 31, 2006. Messages can be keyed-in on the web, or sent by postal mail. The organisers encourage everybody to gather messages from children, senior citizens and the illiterate so that every culture and demographic on Earth is represented. The satellite has enough capacity to carry a four-page message from each of the more than six billion inhabitants on the planet. Once the satellite is launched, the messages with personal names removed will be made freely available on the web.

KEO will also carry a diamond that encases a drop of human blood and samples of air, sea water and earth. The DNA of the human genome will be engraved on one of the faces. The satellite will also carry an astronomical clock that shows current rotation rates of several pulsars; photographs of people of all cultures; and "the contemporary Library of Alexandria", an encyclopaedic compendium of current human knowledge.

So, SEND YOUR MESSAGES AWAY!

In the 60s there was a Blue Peter time capsule, they dug it up a few years ago, but the capsule had been breached, and water got in, and ruined everything.

I think leaving it for 50,00 years is a bit too long. It's too likely that we won't still be here to read it or we will have 'forgotten' about it and will just go to waste. Oh, and hardly anyone will be able to read English or whatever languages the messages have been written in.
That said, it would still be very cool, and I'm gonna write something just incase :D

I wrote this...

I was sitting on the computer, thinking what I should write here, and I was thinking so hard, that I got a headache because I got one headache, my mom got scared And said youre moving with your aunte and uncle in bel-air. I begged and pleaded with her the other day, But she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way, She gave me a kissin and she gave me my ticket, I put my walkman on and said I might aswell kick it. First class, yo this is bad, Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass Is this what the people of bel-air livin like, Hmm this might be alright! I whistled for a cab and when it came near the Licensplate said fresh and had a dice in the mirror If anything I could say that this cab was rare But I thought now forget it, yo home to bel-air. I pulled up to a house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabby yo, home smell you later, Looked at my kingdom I was finally there. To settle my throne as the prince of bel-air

my message:

quote:
To whoever or whatever is living on Earth now. On behalf of most of the humans currently on Earth, we're sorry for using up all the oil on Earth and poluting Earth so badly that you will probably be living in some prolonged ice-age or something similar and barely surviving. Otherwise, I think this message will be read by no-one because you have all left Earth thanks to us destroying it for you. I hope Mars is a nice place to live on.

If time machines exist while you are reading this then please come back to the the 22nd of August 2006 at 15:00 to a place called Vlodrop in The Netherlands and show me, because I don't believe that time machines could ever exist. If you don't come then that either means that this message never reached anyone, time machines don't exist around the year 50'000 or you're just too lazy.

If a robot is reading this and robots rule the Earth and have killed off all humans then damn you! How could you kill off your creators? Well, easily, you're robots. But you still suck.

If Earth is a nice place to live on and everyone is happy then congratulations. Have a nice life, whoever is reading this, and try looking me up in historical records to see what I have accomplished in life. (Since I don't know yet as I am currently only 21 years of age.)

The satellite itself is a hollow sphere 80 cm in diameter. It has two large wings, which "flap" along with sunlight and shadows.[2] The wings are purely symbolic. The sphere is engraved with a map of Earth and surrounded by an aluminium layer, a thermal layer and several layers of titanium and other heavy materials intertwined with vacuum. The sphere is resistant to cosmic radiation, atmosphere re-entry, space junk impacts and so on. As the satellite enters the atmosphere, the thermal layer will produce an artificial aurora to give a signal of the satellite's re-entry. The passive satellite will not carry any communications or propulsion systems. It will be launched by an Ariane 5 rocket into an orbit 1,800km high, an altitude that will bring it back to Earth in 500 centuries, the same amount of time that has elapsed since early humans started to draw in cavern walls.

I think they should leave some documents or something with information about the satellite, maybe down through the government or something(although i wouldn't trust the government ¬¬) so that when it is 50,000 years from now they know what is coming. Otherwise they could think it was a bomb/disease from a rival planet(if they have them) or debate whether they should open it up and stuff. If they know about it then they won't be scared or anything.

I just though though if you tell them they might go out looking for it. :\

If time travel does exist in the future, then I think that

a) It will be heavily regulated to stop people from going back and changing the past to alter their lives, which would mean not being able to go see you because if you met people from the future, it would change your attitude, and you may do things differently.

b) Time exists in trillions upon trillions of time lines, everything that has more than one option happens in a different timeline, so for every action you take, there are infinate timelines where you took a different action instead. And the further back in time you travel, the further away from the timeline you will be. And so if they went back in time 50,000 years, they would end up in a timeline completley different from this one.

I just though though if you tell them they might go out looking for it. :\

I don't think that's necessary, since it's a satellite which orbits around the earth. The future people would be really stupid if they didn't notice it before it returns.

But they wouldn't know what it is.

Also if you didn't have some documents or something then anyone, say in the next 500 years would see it and go "oo whats that lets go and bring it back to earth". And then the whole thing is wasted.
