Multiple logs? by Afflictive on 08-24-2006 at 11:14 PM

Anybody know how to keep chat messages from saving to multiple log files?
It's an annoying bug, (Or feature?  God I hope not.), especially when I need to comb through three or four files just to find a certain conversation.
Or would anybody know how to merge these files in their proper dates, so I can just fix the problem when it happens?

Windows Live Messenger Conversation Log Files do have a limit I believe, I was wondering this myself actually, if there is any way to change the limit?

I wouldn't know.   The logs that are doing this have varying sizes.   I find that if I put the new ones into a seperate folder and leave the original, it goes back to work on that one for some time and then acts up again.

It won't be anything to do with limits on the log size. It's all to do with file locking.

If a log file is locked, for whatever reason, Messenger will create a new file to continue logging to. Then Messenger will always use the newest file for future logs. This is why, when you move the new files out, Messenger goes back to the original file: as far as it's concerned, the original is now the newest.

Edit: Plus! logs can also suffer from the same problem.

Well I dont think WLM's Conversation Logs Lock ... They must have a Limit, as a Window appears saying the Max Log Size has been Reached ... and asks you to start a new Log (I can't remember the exact text atm)

But it does go on to create

yourcontact@host.com.xml
yourcontact@host.com(1).xml
yourcontact@host.com(2).xml

etc.

Has to be a way to modify the default log size?
