Backgrounds cause WLM to close by dre1 on 09-06-2006 at 04:38 AM

I have been using WLM ver 8.0 since beta intro several months ago. I have
used the 'released' version for awhile now, with no problems. Decided i
needed background change....went to tools/my backgrounds, opened it and
immediately received message saying 'WLM needs to close'. So....tried several
times with same result. Re-installled WLM same result, downloaded 'newest'
release, installed...same result, tried 'repair' with same result. Background
change simply does not work, everytime i open it it closes WLM....need suggestions..thx...Dave

Okay, go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down to "Windows Live Messenger" and press Change/Remove. Remove the software, then go to C:\Program Files\ and delete the folder "MSN Messenger". Reboot your computer, go to http://messenger.msn.com/ to re-download the software and then re-install.

(This is a clean install, where most of the files on the computer are deleted.)

Do a backup first before uninstalling it.

Ok....solved!!!....this is for future reference, thx to those that pointed me right direction....tried suggestion in post 2 (traxor).  This didn't solve the problem, but got me thinking.  Went to C:/Documents and Settings/user/application data/microsoft/msn messenger/~file number~/backgrounds.  I found several duplicate backgrounds with same pic but diferent file description.  I deleted the duplicates and removed my 'customs'.  Messenger does not close now when i go to My Backgrounds.  I will try adding my 'customs' back in as i need/want them, but i suspect the problem was the duplicates......comment if need be....thx all...Dave
