Depends on what you're trying to do. Basically, you have the good old DOS prompt.

This site's formatting is shit, but give it a try anyway.

This is the main one you should use is: chkdsk

This is a list of available commands on the console:

  • Attrib: Changes the attributes of a file or directory.
  • Batch: Executes the commands specified in the text file.
  • ChDir (Cd): Displays the name of the current directory or changes the current directory.
  • Chkdsk: Checks a disk and displays a status report.
  • Cls: Clears the screen.
  • Copy: Copies a single file to another location.
  • Delete (Del): Deletes one or more files.
  • Dir: Displays a list of files and subdirectories in a directory.
  • Disable: Disables a system service or a device driver.
  • Diskpart: Manages partitions on your hard drives.
  • Enable: Starts or enables a system service or a device driver.
  • Exit: Exits the Recovery Console and restarts your computer.
  • Expand: Extracts a file from a compressed file.
  • Fixboot: Writes a new partition boot sector onto the system partition.
  • Fixmbr: Repairs the master boot record of the partition boot sector.
  • Format: Formats a disk.
  • Help: Displays a list of the commands you can use in the Recovery Console.
  • Listsvc: Lists the services and drivers available on the computer.
  • Logon: Logs on to a Windows 2000/XP installation.
  • Map: Displays the drive letter mappings.
  • Mkdir (Md): Creates a directory.
  • More: Displays a text file.
  • Rename (Ren): Renames a single file.
  • Rmdir (Rd): Deletes a directory.
  • Set: Displays and sets environment variables.
  • Systemroot: Sets the current directory to the systemroot directory of the system you are currently logged on to.
  • Type: Displays a text file.

sorry for double post but here's the full story: the computer always had windows update on notify me, but dont automatically install the updates. Today it somehow changed and it instaled the wga notification. I tried to remove it by sys restore, didnt work. I went into safe mode and deleted all the files except the reg keys because it gave an error. I logged back in normally and instad of deleting the whole folder i deleted the keys one by one from there. I logged off to see if the wga thingy from the log on screen was removed, but instead of showing the xp login screen, it shows the win2k and before login box. I try to login both the main user and the administrator. As soon as it says logging in, it terminates and logs back out. (on both noramla and safe mode) So i decided to repair windows, but i forgot that on that machine it never finishes for some reason. I'm still stuck at 34 minutes left after 2 hours. I know that a sys restore would help but for that I need to log-in right? How do I do that? :/

I'd like to fix this soon ;)

It is well documented (by me that is, in various computers) that the windows recovery utility is b.s. I mean it only works when it wants. Sometimes you order it to recover and do everything right and although it appears recovering when the computer restarsts it hasn't recovered anything at all... So I don't know if that is the case, but if it is you can stop trying to use system restore because if that is happening it is because windows somehow damaged your restore files. Windows does that sometimes out of nothing... Good old microsoft...

To put it lightly; you're screwed :).

I've had the same problem before, only a clean install worked.

It's related to some driver installation or other, and apparently if you find what the problem driver is, you can delete the file, and setup will continue as normal, but it's never worked for me.

You could try some web searches.
