A favour by saralk on 09-11-2006 at 07:52 PM

Could someone please do me this favour.

If you are very organised and have a very well organised filing system on your computer, could you please take a screenshot of your My Documents folder (or equivelent) in explorer view (with the tree style structure), showing off the extent to which the folder system is organised. Preferably making it look very complicated.

Also, if you have a very disorganised filing system, can you please take a screenshot of a particularly disorganised folder, in list view, showing as many files as possible.

It is for my computing coursework, I am creating a file indexing system, and need to show why people would need it.

That's the most disorganised carpet on my system :p

RE: A favour by Jimcando on 09-11-2006 at 08:06 PM

Did you want the contents of the folder aswell?
It's not incredibly complex, but kind of organised :P

Mine is my desktop (1024x768), being filled with files and folders and so on.

And I cant really show you cause I got 2 new monitors that let me go to 1280x1024, but it still kinda messy.

RE: A favour by andrewdodd13 on 09-12-2006 at 03:26 PM

This is my "My Documents", fairly organised, slightly empty :)

RE: A favour by andrewdodd13 on 09-12-2006 at 06:02 PM

It's actually just a neat trick to see if my parents are checking up on me or not (they're limited accounts, and so theoratically shouldn't be able to see inside my folders anyway, but they might get my password... my dad's kinda geeky, he knows how to use auditor)

The 9.53GB is actually just a 10 240 000 000 byte sparse file :)

And finally, I forgot to mention this in my first post, but I actually have a very organised structure on my system:

C:
- Documents and Settings
- Windows

D:
- Archived Downloads (useful things, such as firefox and the like)
- Games (duh)
- Internet (browsers, mail clients, p2p stuff)
- Media (anything to do with audio, image processing, etc)
- Software (general stuff that doesnt fit in other categories)
- System (system maintenance stuff)
- Temp
Pagefile.sys

P:
- Downloads from the start of the month (keeps track so I don't go over the 40gb limit)
- Internet Cache

It's possible to change the default program files directory (and my documents using the windows installer, much harder after windows is actually installed)

-- A file indexing thing would be fairly useful for me, it'd let me see what I'd installed where :)
-- I don't really have enough documents for the need to index them, but...
-- I have a PHP CMS I run for the school I go to (I made it myself, fairly proud of it), and it'd be nice to index the documentation for it :)

Because I order almost everything in a decent way (at least, that's what I think :p) I almost never use the (excuse my french) crappy "My Documents" folder. eg: Even when I install programs, the first thing I do is re-ordening the starts menu items.

One big reason for that: I don't want to put everything (gigabytes of stuff) into 1 folder. Moreover, not everything is "a document" IMHO.

A big factor is also that I am the only user of this computer (otherwise I would use the my documents folder a bit more... refering to PC at work).

In fact, the "my documents" folder is mostly used for test-stuff only and to see/test default paths and such (as extremely many programs use the my documents folder by default). So all it contains are some redundant first log files or stuff like that (exception would be the "my music" subfolder)

To give an idea of the level of ordening: My average subfolder count (the folders I create, not talking about folders created by programs)  is 5 sublevels.

Some important or much used folders have their own icon too (msn messenger, plus! (which is a subfolder of msn messenger as it only relates to that), mIRC, Visual Studio, Netscape).

anyways,

I don't need a file indexing system either, as I have no trouble finding any file (I very rarely need to use the search in Windows and if I do, it is mostly to search for keywords in a series of real documents).

If I would need a file indexing tool, I'd use the free Copernic Desktop Search which is extremely powerful, can index many file types, is extremely fast in searches, and very light on PC resources (nope, I don't hold a share in the company :p but maybe some stuff of this program can give you more ideas what to include and what not).

Good luck with your project.... keep us posted ;)
