3G by Weyzza on 09-22-2006 at 01:56 AM

I was thinking to get Sony Ericsson K800 tomorrow.
I did search but I still couldn't understand how the 3G technology will be useful for me.

Can someone explain to me the use of 3G other than faster downloads and makes you looks cool because you have 3G on your phone?

Can I use VoIP if I have a 3G phone?

If any of you has 3G subscription, can you tell me how much more you pay for the subscription compared to the regular service?

I read news about T-Mobile USA just won 850MHz bandwidth in a wireless auction spectrum.
And all news I read seem to imply that the 3G will using GSM 850, but K800 doesn't have that band. Can someone clarify this?

3G allows your phone to send and recieve data with a speed much faster than the old mobiles. Here in Finland, the most popular features of 3G phones are video calls (you can see the one you are speaking to and she/he can see can see you with no lag) and watching TV (most operators here have a service that allows you to watch a handful of channels on the phone). However, for the features related to calling ohters (video calls, for example) the ohter person also needs a 3G phone.

i just got the Nokia N80 which is also 3G,  ( what you  should do is ask to read a 3G Manual on a Mobile which may help you understand how it works an its benefits )

Edit i myself looked at a i think its the K610i Sony Erricson phone , i didnt like it,

3G doesn't work over GSM. It will work on a different protocol, for example UTMS or W-CDMA. However, most 3G phones also have GSM radios, and can work on GSM as well.

The faster internet is because the 3G protocols have been designed for it. To get internet over GSM, it would be through GPRS (not as fast) or over CSD (slow).

You can't use the 3G to use VOIP from your phone. Somebody may have made a VOIP application program for K800, using Bluetooth or perhaps even 3G fast internet.

There's no real use than the faster downloads, video calling, and having a phone that has 3G printed on it, is bulkier, and runs shorter amounts of time between charges.

Also, if you don't want the 3G features, you can buy the Sony Ericsson K790 which has the same features as the K800, excluding the 3G features.
Also, you dont need to have a 3G subscription to use the mobile phone ;)

That's what I was looking for.
But to my surprise the dealers didn't even know that model :(

Good news: I prolly get K800 for $165 (or less!) :D or maybe N73 with $95 more.
Bad news: I can't decide which one I should pick :p

I agree, Symbian systems really are great, I have a N-Gage (old one, sukcs, but the symbian makes it better :P).

I must admit that 3G is something I don't have, but I really want it, so my choice would be a Nokia n-series. :)

What is symbian? :s (what is so great about it?)
I'm in the market too and I'm thinking about whether to get the Sony Ericsson W800i (GSM) or the Nokia 6265i (CDMA).

And how can phones with Symbian is better (or faster)?
Is that because it has a scheduler and memory management?
RE: 3G by Harr1l on 09-24-2006 at 09:22 AM

Symbian phones allow user to install native apps (not java) like AgileMessenger which is very good instant messaging program. You can also install many other apps like screensavers, google maps and some games too (also N-Gage games will work).

The 3G thing is also something I have but is quite unstable and it works only in main cities here in Finland. I don't know if it's only here in Finland that sometimes in 3G areas calls won't come to phone but goes to answering machine. Usually downloads are from 10kB/s to 40kB/s. The main reason for this phone is that I have free 3G/GPRS so I can get Internet everywhere and use it with laptop.

Still if you even think that you would need 3G take it. Especially if you plan to keep that phone more than year.

You can do all you mentioned above on the Java platform.
I have seen all of what you mentioned as a java app ;)
Example:
mig33 - Instant Messenger
Ruza - Something like a screensaverp
J2meMap - Google map java application
Zelda Mobile - One of the many mobile java games :P
As you can see, many stuff are available for the java platform (especially if your phone has MIDP 2.0 which the K800 has, and every new phone in general).

You should get a symbian phone however, if you want more advanced features like PDF document reading.
If you decide to get a symbian phone, get a sony ericsson symbian phone :P

RE: 3G by Harr1l on 09-24-2006 at 09:45 AM

The point was that symbian apps can be more advanced and work faster than java apps. Although symbian itself on my 6630 is pretty slow in menus.
