External or Internal Hard Drive? by M73A on 10-14-2006 at 09:33 PM

what would you recommend?

can i share external hard drives over my wireless network?

are there any advantages or disadvantages?

Thanks :)

Internals usually have a higher rpm than a usb one (external) and the externals cost so much more.
Internals are cheap and fast and good if its going to be static inside a pc - not being taken in and out all of the time.
When a external one is for people who have lots of data they need to carry around with them all of the time.
So if you just need it for your pc get a internal one but if you need one to carry around - take to school etc... external.

Yes, I have done that with my dads external 300gb Hard Drive :)

(Though I don't know why I did not just bring the harddrive upstairs8-))

I think External would be better, because it can be portable.

But what I would reaaaaally suggest is a External HardDrive Enclosure

for example

Mega Long URL :o

My dad has one of these as well.

It is good because all you do is you just pop a normal hard drive into it. And now it is basically...portable :p

So it can help so it can be a Internal and External at the same time :)

One disadvantage I would think is you have to buy the harddrive seperatly....:p

It kinda depends on what you wana use it for. (other than storing data :P) E.g are you going to want to take some of the data on there round to a friends or something.

I have an external drive i share with my dad and it's great to just quickly put a few files on there and take it round a friends. Although it is kinda like a glorified usb stick if you use it this way.

Oh and do you have an internal one already or are you using as your main/only HDD?

Well,

First, if this will be a main harddrive (installing a Operating System on)

Then switch the Jumper on the harddrive to master

if it will just hold data or install programs etc.

Set to Slave on the jumper.

It should show how to do the jumper stuff on the harddrive itself :)

You just have to set it to slave like Sam said but when you buy it the  manual should reveal all. :P

RAM, I'm pretty sure you just plug it in(it's a kind of unclip this clip that back in job :P) and turn your computer on and Windows should recognize it.

Make sure to wear an earth band when installing it though.

No not slave in the bios

^ The little piece on the pins is the jumper....depending on where you put it tells what it is....(what you are trying to get is Slave)

Below is a EXAMPLE...It does not mean these are the ways to set the jumper on your harddrive. This is just a example for a Maxtor harddrive I have.

Well i think earthing it is bull shit,
just to test one day i wore a wooly jumper and put ram in it i went through the whole day with it in there and even rubbed it when i got back i plugged it in and lo behold it still worked.
Just thought i;d say that =p

No, just insert the ram into a slot :)

If it does not work something is wrong, or you got the wrong type of ram.

For example...old PC's use PC100 (well...thats the earliest ram I have used)

if i find specs for my current ram... what things would i need to check are the same so its compatibe :) pc? (dont actually no what any of the letters and stuff mean)

after its recognized by the bios and it winblows boots, youll need to format it :P, its quite easy....
about the password, while your case is open take the battery off for about 10-15 min to reset the bios... you will loose any settings on it tho...

RE: External or Internal Hard Drive? by foaly on 10-14-2006 at 11:38 PM

and if it doesn't show up with the jumper setting on slave...
try setting it to cable select...

You have to know the type of ram... for example SDRAM, DDR SDRAM or EDO... I guess you have DDR...

your bios is the system that starts up your computer...
you can for example turn on wol (wake on lan) or turn computer on by typing a password... or getting it out of standby by using your mouse...
some types can do very few things some can do a lot...
It is hard to say what your bios can do...
