c0000218 registery error :( by Steven on 10-14-2006 at 11:41 PM

Hi, i have a few problems, let me give you some info first, the problem is on a IBM thinkpad i series, and the cdrom drive doesnt recognize disks (this was like this for a few weeks back) 2. this laptop doesnt support floppy disks.... (like theres no hole to put it in) Sorry for slang im on psp,))

  So heres what happens when i try to boot it normally. I get a bsod saying stop:c0000218 {Registry file failure}
The registry cannot load the hive(file);
\systemRoot\system32\config\software
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt , absent or not writable.
Beginning dump of physical memory.
Dumping physical memory to disk:
Dump complete. Please contact your admin for further assitance.

   So i try to put the xp recovery disk, and since my cdrom was damaged or not working... it couldnt read it and made weird noises. is there a way to access the registery with out having a disk present? Then i would know what to do.

I tried all the safe modes, and i still get the same bsod.

the only things that I know off that you can try are:

1. boot in safe mode
2. boot with last known working settings
3. boot from an usb device (if your bios supports it)

Safe mod results in bsod also (cookie you sure can help me here...)

If your optical drive will not recognize any disks then the only other option is to connect the HDD to another pc and copy the installation files over to HDD then boot off of it to reinstall Windows.

It has to be specific IBM drive. So there is no way to access the regestrey?

steven what Matty means i think is to Clone your HDD  an reinstall a Fresh copy of windows  onto HDD

DvD Burners around $70 AUD now an thats a good one, there comming down with or before the introduction of Blu-Ray Drives

No not clone the drive hes going to need to format it, well he could backup the data... but he would want to start the XP installation where it copies over the files then when he connects it back to his own laptop it will start the XP install.

You need to get a new one anyway, you wanna go on and use your laptop without floppy and cd-drive?

And indeed it's no where near $350, you can almost get a new lapop for that price :S

You can get the for under $100.

Smart, that would probably work.

Everything went fine for a few weeks. UNTILL. today i was on the same laptop and my mom by accident pulled out the cord. So i started the computer up (battery is dead hasnt worked in years) and got STOP 0x000000ED error, and a few other numbers. I know and searched about this, so called UNMOUNTABLE VOLUME. So is the only way to fix it, to do what i did before and make my dad not be able to use this laptop /his for a day? Switching hdd to the good pc then doing recovery disks. (The cdrom doesnt work on the bad laptop). Is there an easy way out? And why did this happen?
