Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by absorbation on 10-19-2006 at 07:34 PM

Yes, the long awaited Internet Explorer 7 has arrived, with such high attention has the browser finally fixed it's ways? Well I wrote a small review, I do think the change is for the best, despite some issues have not been addressed. More importantly what are your views with the update ? :P

Download Internet Explorer 7

what's so bad about copying good features? If they didnt add it it wouldnt have a chance (it still doesnt have a chance though 8-))

So, is it true that we can now delete index.dat while not running on safe mode?

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by linx05 on 10-20-2006 at 08:01 AM

I downloaded it and tried it out for the first time the other day. My first thoughts was that it is ok. I couldn't bring up the File menu for starters. I can't make it move above the address bar.

Where is the 'new tab' button? I can't seem to customise the toolbars. On the outside, it is a bit disappointing for me. On the inside, I don't know all about that stuff. I know the loading of web pages has been sped up. Other things have been fixed etc (PNG and .gif bug). I use Maxthon so as long as the insides are better, I'm happy.

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by -dt- on 10-20-2006 at 08:10 AM

heh its nothing special just a new gui , some better css rendering and its now sandboxed.

so =p continue using Firefox / Opera

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by John Anderton on 10-20-2006 at 09:49 AM

I still like firefox. Better looks, dev base, customisation, feels more comfortable to me etc.
This was from the IE beta's. IE 7 final is being downloaded via windows update so once its done, lets see how it is :)
Dont think its going have changed enough for me to go back to IE. Hell I personally dont think ill be leaving FF :)

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by Eddie on 10-20-2006 at 10:47 AM

Firefox is slowly taking over the browsing world, and the speed and growing strength of Firefox is going to be hard to stop. Firefox ftw :D
But this version of Internet Explorer is pretty good in comparison, although i do find it a bit slow loading tabs etc. :)

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by Menthix on 10-20-2006 at 12:43 PM

Dunno, need a crack to install it, lol :). Dodgy validation checks.

Judging by what I've seen and heard they made some nice improvements. But not enough to make me stop using FF.

FF has been copying tabs from Opera... when Opera was developing tabbed drowsing there was already another company developing a tabbed browser too, the Netcaptor browser has been around for many years with tabbed browsing in an IE engine... it''s just a common feature in browsers. Like Chrono said, if nobody would copy good features there will never be any competition.

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by Jimbo on 10-20-2006 at 01:06 PM

I hate it. its worse than IE6. and its so hard to navigate around

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by black widow on 10-20-2006 at 01:15 PM

I use IE 6 because the dutch version of IE 7 comes out between november en februari. And i must say that firefox is a good browser but my computer deleted everything related to it when i used hitman pro and spy sweeper. All FF had been removed so i think it is still using spywere. And the opera browser sucks, I cannot start my comp using that browser, so, i think that i stick with IE 7, that way i know for sure that i have a browser that is safe. And for me IE is good enough. Everyone chooses there own browser.

Haha :D. Firefox is an opensource browser, so if they would add dirty little things in FF the opensource community will certainly let the world know. There is no way there is spyware in FF.

What might have happened is that you catched some spyware from somewhere else that plugins to FF (like a browser toolbar), and because of that a badly written anti-spyware program deleted FF itself. Or you have downloaded FF from an untrusted location that bundled it with spyware.

How could you not find the refresh button :|

It's just at the end of the address bar. Took like all of 3 seconds for me to locate it.

IMO the navigation isn't hard, if you want the other toolbars you just hit Tools > Toolbars and if you want to customize the buttons Tools > Toolbars > customize. And to bring up a proper menu bar with 'file' 'edit' etc you go to Tools > Menu Bar. ( i have to agree though, the new layout is kinda stupid. I think maybe it shouldn't be so 'stripped down' as default.)

But FF is still better (for me) :P
RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by absorbation on 10-20-2006 at 03:57 PM

My point is, we can navigate easy. But how about people who struggle with computers? Internet Explorer is used by people with a huge range of different abilities, it is far from user-friendly as it should be.

Yes, me and markee were saying this on WLM, it is a bad move to make the deafult of IE7 to be so 'bare' because that not everyone will be able to use it. I think it is an attempt by MS to try and win over some of the FF and opera and other browser users.

They should have had it laid out pretty much the same as IE6 but have the options to make it like it is now.
RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by absorbation on 10-20-2006 at 04:05 PM

Too much glamour, not enough simple down to earth stuff. Simple things make a huge difference. The Vista style font's really mess things up as well.

That really bugs me too :@

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by Lourix on 10-20-2006 at 04:42 PM

I still like IE6 better, IE6 seems more better for me. I can't really explain it but IE7 seems too colourful but there's probably a way to change it.

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by wolfeboy100 on 10-20-2006 at 04:54 PM

well it took me some time to get use to it and i didn't really find much new features, to me it just looks different with tabs i use it though, but its something that will never replace my FF.

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by RaPLeX on 10-20-2006 at 05:18 PM

thats ok for me.

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by rav0 on 10-22-2006 at 03:08 AM

I haven't got the newest Internet Explorer 7 yet, Beta 3 I think.

It's a lot better than version 4, 5, 6.

Tabs are cool. I've noticed that they are a bit slow when creating a new one (I'm only using beta though), but a lot quicker than Firefox still. Even though they should be blank, they show "Connecting" when they are opened (even with a new window), dunno if it's fixed for final.

There is more room taken by the page, rather than the horrendous amount of toolbar buttons linke IE6. Without my custom Opera UI, Internet Explorer gives more space to the page than Opera does!

I have having to use IE6 at school, hopefully they get version seven soon.

This bugs the hell out of me. Not only does it change it in IE7 - which I'll only ever use for Patch Tuesdays - but it also changes it in things like the MMC (services.msc, etc), my active desktop (which thank God still works, but looks horrible) and the World of Warcraft game launcher...

So basically anything which uses Microsoft's HTTP renderer. :(

Oh, and it'd been out ~1 day and there was an exploit in it already (albeit low-medium risk)

Edit: My bad, you can turn ClearType off :)

Say what you want, but i stick with IE. It works fine for me. It is trustworthy, it is safe and good enough as a browser.

dus ik ben tevreden, if you can read it.
RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by Thor on 10-22-2006 at 01:19 PM

I think it has improved, even though Opera and FF are the only browsers I'm ever gonna use. (Except when I'm on MS)

The GUI isn't so much to say "hurray" for, as I honestly just don't like it. But, there has been some CSS fixes and it supports png alpha transparency.

So, IE7 is better than IE6, but it's not a good browser anyways.

Safe??? Umm.. Yeah, safer than IE6 but far away from safe.

It's not my intention to make you switch anyway. Everyone should make their own choice :). In the end most of the big name browsers are decent and they all have their good and bad points. Just pointing out that Mozilla bundling spyware with FF is just as unlikely as MS bundling spyware with IE :).
RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by aNILEator on 10-22-2006 at 03:11 PM

I think its terrible I can't place the menu bar at the top or the other bar with the icons in and its supposed to be customizeable???? firefox lets me do all that and more, also it forces the ie7 icon as your .html files icon and its impossible to change it so i am really pissed off at it, It's fucking shit at working with offline sites containing any code and even worse when there is flash also.

It's just nasty :( Firefox 2 FTW <:o)

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by vaccination on 10-22-2006 at 03:34 PM

Nile: My *.html files stay with the firefox icon, maybe IE7 is set to your default browser?

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by Chris4 on 10-22-2006 at 03:51 PM

First Impressions

I download it. Seems to be taking a while to download just for an installer. So after a few mins I start installing it. I go off for 15 minutes and come back and it's still installing. It says 'finalising installation' and then it finishes. Now it wants to restart the computer and I do so.

So after the restart, I open up Internet Explorer. Takes about a minute just to open after clicking it. So it finally opens. "Wow, that's weird" I'm thinking. Looks weird maximised on a big resolution. But you can see more of the page without the toolbars, which is a good thing I guess. So there's less buttons, more cleaner. Why the 'Windows Messenger' button though? Who uses that? The text looks different on IE7, ClearType Tuning is used I guess. Not sure about that.

* Chris4 uninstalls and goes back to Firefox :refuck:

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by rav0 on 10-23-2006 at 06:45 AM

The address bar is stuck at the top so that the user can always be sure where to find it, especially for less experienced people, search toolbars can't put themselves where the address bar goes and trick the user into using it instead of the real address bar.

The icon stealing isn't by design, if the icons cannot be changed, there is a problem with it.

Windows Messanger button? Aww man ... that isn't in the beta, I'm going to hack the final if it has it at my place.

RE: Internet Explorer 7 is now out, what are your views? by Chestah on 10-23-2006 at 07:09 AM

IE7 is a huge improvement from IE6 in many aspects (security, performance, features etc). Even if you are using Firefox i'd recommend upgrading IE6 to IE7 anyways for security reasons.
