Isn't it :
Bidmas
Brackets Indices Division Muliplication Addition Subtraction
?

[offtopic]
i was always taught

how are they "brackets of division" or "brackets of addition"? :-/

Indices are another word for exponents.  Isn't it "PEDMAS" in the UK though?
RE: [beta UPDATE] Math Games by foaly on 11-28-2006 at 11:34 AM

wouldn't it be something like BEMDSAS then?
(Brackets, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Squareroot, Addition, Subtraction)
that's how I learned it... (more or less)

Squareroot is to the power of a half so it must come before multiplication and division.  The order has to be:
  • Brackets
  • Index/Exponential/Power (including square root, cubic root, etc. as these are just to the power of 1/2, 1/3, etc. respectively)
  • Multiplication (division is just multiplication of an inverse number)
  • Addition (subtraction is just addition of an inverse number)
These are the rules that give our number system and these anecdotes  are not needed fully.  The only reason why division and subtraction are used are because the use of inverse is not taught until later in the curriculum and hence is beyond the understanding at that stage.

It's BODMAS over here... I always though it was lame to use "powers Of"... BEDMAS seems more logical

RE: [beta UPDATE] Math Games by jameslives on 11-28-2006 at 04:37 PM

actually there is BODMAS and BIDMAS
different methods and in the uk we use those two

tbh BIDMAS is better
because in BODMAS, the O can mean all sorts of things, its interpreted different by loads of people

RE: [beta UPDATE] Math Games by Zephyr on 11-28-2006 at 04:39 PM

Yeah in the UK, i've always been taught it as BODMAS.

B - Brackets
O - Orders (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.)
DM - Division and Multiplication
AS - Addition and Subtraction

In french it's PEDMAS :p

tbh that's a pretty lame way of teaching things :P. Specially if you cant even agree on a single one :P. Do you really need to know a word so you can remember in which order to do things? i mean, it's not that hard :P

PEMDAS.

Parenthesis, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.

RE: [split] BEDMAS/BIDMAS/BOMDAS/BODMAS/... by segosa on 11-29-2006 at 09:13 AM

Or you could just learn it and not need an acronym.

RE: [split] BEDMAS/BIDMAS/BOMDAS/BODMAS/... by John Anderton on 11-29-2006 at 09:23 AM

BODMAS is what we were taught as kids.
Brackets
Order
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction

If only people would google...
Who cares about an acronym. Just remember the damn thing. After some time you'll realise that you don't need the damn thing anyway. Its the meaning of the thing that matters.
And oh, want to see the power of google? Check this out and there are at least another 22499 others like that..

Its right.

BODMAS is Brackets, Order, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.

BODMAS is taught until exponents is taught, and which the acronym turns into BEDMAS.

This is the English Canadian way (Ontario way at least).
RE: [split] BEDMAS/BIDMAS/BOMDAS/BODMAS/... by andrewdodd13 on 11-30-2006 at 11:05 PM

We're taught Brackets Others, so BODMAS. Personally I think this works, because I can't think of anything else that doesn't take priority over D/M, and it covers all of Exponents (which are the same as indices) but also surds (which are 1/indices, ie. the Nth root).

But meh, I haven't used that in years, it's all second nature to me now. You'll make lots of use of it if you go on to do Maths / Physics with all the rearranging algebra.

I don't use that either. Its automatic by the time you do it for 5 years...

BTW...Kids at my school are stupid (except for me and a few)

We are still learning how to multiply and divide fractions :(

WTF is a fraction? :s jk :p

I passed GCSE Maths with a B and I don't know how the hell pythagoras works. Maths is over rated anyways :p

on a right angled triangle, the square of the two shorter sides equals the square of the long side.

a2+b2=c2

Our teacher briefly talked about it last year, but I still know it.

well i hate to say this... but its DODMAS! :P haha jks, i was cleaning me folder out today in maths and i found the BODMAS crap i did like early in teh yr... and i looked on the heading n it said "DODMAS", lol, but i dunno wat i did when i was writing that..... i just put hte D instead of the B

err in my school we were allways taught BIDMAS! I've never even heard of any of the others..especially PEDMAS or whatever :dodgy:
