Computer Suggestions? by albert on 12-04-2006 at 12:13 AM

hey guys, I've recently been searching for a new pc (desktop).

I was mostly wondering between the processors. If I should go with AMD x2 or Intel Core duo ViiV..

I don't actually know much in processors, and i was hoping you guys can help me understand.

I'm searching for something that is not only powerful, but something that is solid and that will last.

I've been looking through the HP computers for the moment..

I don't necessairly have a bugdet.. As long as it doesn't go over 2000$ CAN.

Thank you for the help.

amd ftw!

amd works better even if the clock speed is lower

and why dont people build custom computers anymore? (buying parts separately). i find it very fun :P

At this moment in time, the best average priced processor you can probably get is the Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 or E6600. I'd seriously recommend you DO NOT buy anything with Pentium in the name.

If you were looking for a laptop I'd honestly recommend a Macbook Pro with windows set as the default OS in bootcamp, but since your looking for a PC I'd recommend HP/Compaq or Dell, or to go the do it yourself route. Something like this may tickle your fancy.

You can upgrade the graphics card if you wish, but if you don't want to you can always look for a different system.

no, the clock speed for AMDs is relatively about half that of Intel processors while executing the same number of operations. This means intel needs about double the clock speed to run as well as AMDs, and that simply isn't possible while keeping a low temperature. With the Intel Core 2 Duo, they've fixed this problem, and Core 2s run about the same operations per second as the AMDs with the same clock speeds.

Edit: in fact, Core 2s supposedly wipe the floor with the existing AMDs

Maybe a year or two ago, yes. I was an AMD Fanboy to death back then, but since the core 2 duo, AMD have fallen waaaay behind :)

Core 2 Duo are far better than AMD AM2 processors.
RE: Computer Suggestions? by brian on 12-05-2006 at 09:50 PM

Core 2 Duo's are the best bang for the buck, for around $400 CAD, you can get the E6600 which can outperform the AMD FX-61.

Got any links to benchmarks or reviews to back that up? =/

For a good "bang for the buck" comparison, look at the E6600 numbers vs AM2 5000+, which cost about the same.

It's nice to see Intel sticking it to the AMD fanboys for once -- and they've really done it this time.  :P
