Need Some Logic. - Teachers are stupid? by prashker on 12-21-2006 at 12:14 AM

Ok,

well today we did a little tricky thing, though no one in the class expected it to be trickable :p

We got a paper and it said this

Intructions

Read All The Lines Carefully.

then under that line it said

Follow the instructions exactly.

So what it says above is too

[Instructions] = Read The Lines Carefully (So what they say is too read the lines, but do not DO them)

[Instructions2] = Follow the intructions exactly! (Which means, follow the instructions which means too Read the lines below carefully :p)

And so

Nobody knew it meant that.

They thought it was, read the lines below and DO them.

So,

The lines below were like this

1. Create A Rectangle with a Circle in it and a triangle on the other side of the page

2. Write the country you were born in backwards.

3. <blah>

4. <blah>
.
.
.
.

All the way too #9

If you have done all the steps succesfully yell out "I am doing good"

(This is the point we all hear people yelling that out, around 15 minutes later, since they did the other steps before)

Then all the way too #10

10. Now if you have completed and did everything EXACTLY as said say "I have completed this exactly and correctly"

So.

In the end we found out that we did not need to all those steps, we just had too read them :p.

So then people started complaining that they did not explain.

Anyways, our teacher explained what I said above.

then under that line it said

Follow the instructions exactly.

So what it says above is too

[Instructions] = Read The Lines Carefully (So what they say is too read the lines, but do not DO them)

[Instructions2] = Follow the intructions exactly! (Which means, follow the instructions which means too Read the lines below carefully :p)

So, then the teacher said "You did not need to write down anything, I should have heard you all say "I am doing good" and "I have completed this exactly and correctly""

So then she said "What I said is right, just shows that no student read anything correctly." So then I complained that if we were supposed to just read them, then we did not need too yell out those things as it was part of the steps.

So yeah, though I made sence I think, I had too stay after school for a few minutes.

My question is, is my logic right :p?

If we just needed to read the questions then would you need to talk out those words?

I had this test the last year
i felt so stupid
only 3 people understood it before doing anything

imho (and strange logic) I would say you were absolutely correct and the teacher not :p

Hmm, those lines numbered 1 to 10 were part of the instructions? If so, the instructions clearly state "Write the country you were born in backwards"... so you DO have to write things down.

Following instructions means executing/doing them.... if instructions say you need to write something, you write something... if instructions say you need to say something you say something... if instructions say you should tell your teacher she doesn't make any sense at all you should, well you get the point :).

But those were not intructions, the intructions were to do read the lines which is the lines that tell you too do something.

For example.

If the intructions said "Read the next line"

And here is the next line.

"Draw a cookie"

It does not mean I had to draw a cookie, I just read that it says "Draw a cookie

not really.
they are pointing you to the next instruction
so you draw a cookie
it does not say read the next line but don't do it..

I did this like 8 years ago in primary school :P

Our sheet was a little different and worded something like:
"Before you begin ensure that you read the steps below completely"

Of course, most people still fell for it.

those test are so stupid...
most off the time there is a flaw in their own logic...
and when you are finished the teacher points out that didn't have to do the things listed...
but when you state you wanted to do it because you where bored the teacher normally gets pissed...

Ah, in that case you should indeed not say the lines or write anything.

I never had a "test" like this, i wonder why they even do this at schools... just a silly/stupid logic game... If i make a test i expect the hard part/judgment to be in the questions, not in the instructions... If i would read instructions like that on a test i would think to myself "Lolz, who fucked up writing that" and continue with the questions (until i realize the questions don't make sense either :D).

Hah :p. Well, teachers don't like their students and like playing mind games with them I guess :p
RE: Need Some Logic. - Teachers are stupid? by Lou on 12-21-2006 at 02:30 AM

My mom made me do this exact test 2 years ago (well it was french). The logic behind the test is simple. It should say "Read all the instructions carefully before acting" or something along those lines, saying don't do anything yet. Most people will still do something, and look like idiots when the reach the bottom.

It's a rather funny thing to do to people and see their reaction when the get to the bottom realizing they did a whole bunch of calculating and speaking and etc for absolutely nothing.

I would say, I inferred that by 'reading', we are also answering those questions. :P

I agree with cookie. If you were supposed to just read the lines and not do what they say then you can only get 100% by not saying "i am doing good" and "I have completed this exactly and correctly", as they are steps and you only need to read them not do them, as you already pointed out sam.

So i would say your teacher is wrong, and needs to accept that (s)he is wrong. Teachers don't like being proved wrong. but you should just knows she is wrong and that you didn't need to be kept behind as you did nothing wrong.

cookie, i don't think it's strange logic. it seems just common sense in a way, and normal logic. but blah :P
