Smilies wont show by elma on 12-31-2006 at 09:23 AM

i just downloaded the messenger plus and have only one minor complaint.

most of my smilies do not show on my friends screens when i use them.  i have windows XP, messenger 8.0, plus version 4.11.0.254.

two of my friends also have the plus but most of my friends do not. some have windows messenger and a few only have msn messenger (they have windows XP and some do not).

what do i do?   the smilies show sometimes on the messenger and the windows messenger but very rarely on the messenger plus for my friends and i also am not able to see their smilies all the time either.

pls help.   thank you

signed,
a smilie-less elma

Are they these type of smilies :D :P (a) (6) or your own emoticons ?

Plus! doesn't do anything that prevents smilies from showing. Are you using a program like SmileyCentral or SweetIm for smilies (these are known not to work alongside Plus!)?

Also make sure the use of emoticons and custom emoticons are enabled in messenger (tools > options > messages..show emoticons/show custom emoticons) on the side that doesn't see the emotes.

You speak about Windows Messenger...i believe you mean Windows Live Messenger Beta here, yes?

If it is not msg plus smiles they might just take time to load.
With me the big ones take time. :)

:fart:thanx for all the help and to answer a few of the questions you asked -

@Vimto - the regular msn smilies do appear 95% of the time the ones that I have a problem with are what I guess u call custom smilies.

@ Sunshine - I do not use Smiley Central - learned the hardway to leave that program alone.  And I do mean Windows Live Messenger Plus - Beta for me and a few friends, but Basic Windows Live Messenger for others. And  I do have the emoticons enabled on my tools menu.

@Nod32 - I will try that and see if it helps.

It is just frustrating that before the upgrade to plus I did not have this problem.

Thank you all for your help and if you can think of anything else I could try that would be most appreciated.

as of 6:32pm tonite.. whatever was stopping the smilies is now resolved. so thank you all.

Hi, my problem is that when someone sends me smiles i can't see them, nor can I see their picture (Top left of chat box). They can see my smilies and my pic. Any ideas. Using the latest Messenger Plus Live (version 4.11.0.254), windows xp professional. Not using any icon/smilie programs such as smilie central.

Would appreciate any help in this area.

cheers

Make sure these options are ticked in Tools > Options > Messages:

and in the General tab > tick 'Show display pictures from others'.

If you still can't resolve it, try reinstalling Windows Live Messenger.

Are you or any of your contacts on dialup? This might be the problem as it is very slow and tends to not download the dp until the very last moment.
