hey all, Happy New Year!

Well here goes,

I want to set up a Network in my home so i can acsess all my files on my home PC from my laptop. I am following these Instrutions, but it won't work :S. On both computers i run the wisard and complete the wisard and get the message the it is complete and has all works ect... then it asked me to restart my computer, i do this on both the PC and laptop and then go to my network places. All i see is my Shared folders on my laptop and not a thing on the PC. how do i solve this or what am i doing wrong :S

Thanks and have a Happy New Year!!

Check if your firewall isn't blocking and if File Sharing is even enabled on the computers.

Can you send a ping to the other computer?

And what are the ip-addresses both the computers use?

how do i check that?

EDIT: The IP adresses are diffrent, i have looked in my firewall setting and enabled file-sharing, none of this is helping, how do i send a ping to the other PC?

Firewall can be checked by going to start -> Right-click My Network Places and choose Properties, there probably will be an Ethernet Adapter called LAN or something. See if there a lock in the upper-left side of the icon. If there is, this might be blocking the file sharing protocol, hence you won't see the other computer's shares.

I'm not sure out of the top of my head how to configure the firewall correctly to unblock file sharing but here's a guide on filesharing that might help you with that.

About the ping, well, you first need to know the ip-addresses of the computers. To find out the ip-address of your computer on the local network you go to start -> run and type cmd. Then the prompt window will open and there you type ipconfig, this will print the ip-address of your computer on the screen. Use this address on the other computer to send a ping.

To send the ping you again go to start -> Run and type cmd, and then in the prompt window you type ping <ip-address> where you change <ip-address> with the address of the other computer. Now your computer will attempt to send 4 ping message's to the other computer.

You can have 2 sorts of answers. Answer from <ip-address> : bytes=xx time=xx ms TTL=xx or Time-out. If you receive the first answer you can at least "see' the other computer on the network, so the problem will then most likely lay higher like the firewall blocking or some other software.

If you receive the Time-Out answer there's something wrong with the network configuration and you should first try to figure that out, make sure the cables are connected, do you have internet on all the pc's, routing problems, that kinda stuff.

EDIT, added some spacing for readability :D

RE: Network by roflmao456 on 12-31-2006 at 09:46 PM

try this:

right click a folder in whatever computer your accessing,
click Sharing and Security..,
then look at the bottom group and click the link that says you still want to (if its there)
then check "Share this folder on the network" and type in your share name.
Optionally if you want network users to add/delete files then press the "Allow network users to change my files".

then go to your other computer that is accessing the one you just configured; open My Documents or anything like Windows Explorer and type in the Address Bar "\\*other computer's name here*\*share name*"

like on mines it is

\\Maindesktop\Shared

accesses my folder that i am sharing.

EDIT: check your firewall and allow full access to your router (in and out)
edit2: this happened to me before lol.

RE: Network by Ptoye on 12-31-2006 at 10:01 PM

Done all that thanks, I got the first one so then the computers can 'see' each other. This Has made no change. What do i do now?

RE: Network by Ezra on 12-31-2006 at 10:04 PM

Did you follow the instructions in the FileSharing Guide?

isnt that "Remote Desktop Connection"?

or did it pop up in Internet Explorer or Firefox?

just type in the address bar after you open My Documents

" \\hallpc\*folder name* " (without the quotes)

and it should work..
