Thats a SATA cable.

Both of them ones you listed are IDE.

It seems you can link.

If your motherboard only has IDE, i dont see why you cant get a IDE drive instead .. :-/

Don't take Maxtor... if you like to keep a healthy drive.

The drive that survived me for some years is a Western Digital Caviar...

Seagate makes noisy harddrives, Maxtor makes faulty ones... Don't know about Samsung & Hitachi...

Maxtor is the best. I have 2x250GB and i don't hear anything. I was very surprised when i first started my new system. This drives are great :).

I suggest also to stay away from maxtor. I bought 2 maxtor drives in the past and the failed not more than 1 month later, so I decided to go back to western digital (which me and my dad have been using since 100 MBs HDDs (yes.... too  old...)) and still working atm. Then I bought another 2x250 Gbs drives for another computer and still working, they don't even make noises (at least I don't hear them)

But if you still need one of the two posted then go for Hitachi.

EDIT: Also,  FYI, PATA=ATA=IDE.

http://www.storagereview.com/ -- detailed reviews and comparisons of virtually every drive out there, look at the LeaderBoard if you just want their recommendation.

It's amazing how much time people spend debating reviews and benchmarks of CPUs and graphics cards, yet very rarely do they bother to do the same for hard drives.  Instead, anecdotal evidence and various prejudice start flying left and right when hard drives are mentioned.  :P

either Seagate or Maxtor is your bst bet, but Hitachi aint bad or samsung SATA drives

I think Maxtor are really good choices I have never had one, but all 50 computer in every lab had Maxtor HD installed and they worked just fine.

Other thing,  if what u're looking for is performance, definitely go for SATA, which are real new and way faster, but first make sure u're motherboard supports it, if it doesn't u may wanna consider upgrading since hard drives are been remodeled to include USB as cache memories, so SATA it's going to be everywhere.

Maxtor? Nope I don't recommend them. I will rank them in order from best to worst.

Samsung, Hitachi, Western Digital, Sea Gate and Maxtor

I guess Sea Gate is around average. I never use them before... Anyway there is a Maxtor company over here closed and Sea Gate take over xD Maxtor is famous for giving problem.

PATA or ATA

SATA

Hitachi are good hard drives, just buy some with the ide interface, it's cheaper :).
