Upgrade BT by EBFL on 01-10-2007 at 06:35 PM

We just upgraded on bt for faster internet, but the speed it only 4669kbs and it should be 8000kbs
And the internet keeps going off so i have to switch the internet off and on again.
Has anoyone else upgraded and experienced that?
Or does anyone know how to stop my internet?

It all depends on where you live. And also it should take roughly a week to get your line profile set.

How far away are you from your exchange?

you can switch off the internets?!?!?! =o

Also, if you are going through a wireless router, or sharing the connection with other computers/devices this could slow down the connection.

Sign up to http://dslzoneuk.net and click on "Distance to exchange"

Also, Post your line stats if you can. They should be similar to this:

And,
If your phone line is the usual quality you get now a days they have a max of about 5MB :) So this could be the cause of your problem

You are around 690 metres from your exchange (as the crow flies).

You're on ADSL Max, you will not get 8MB, no matter what they say. ADSL Max is up to 8MB, chances are you will get about 5mb unless you are pretty close to your exchange and have a good line.

I dont think he will get a good connection.

Im about 50 meters away from it, and i can get about 7.5mps.
He is like 700meters away from  it. My uncle lives about 500 meters away and he only gets 5mbps.

So either move closer or get ADSL2+.

Your exact connection speed can be found by going into your router settings.

However, 700 meters is a fairly short distance. I live roughly 2.5km as the crow flies (which means maybe up to 4km cable distance) from my exchange, and my router reports between 5.2mb and 6.1mb - it disconnects a lot. It sucks.

Edit: Although it has been up 1 day 18 hours :o

RE: Upgrade BT by kao on 01-10-2007 at 11:14 PM

I live 1.2km from my exchange, from my admin panel on ISPs site "Current Line Rate      6,816 kb/s (updated 06/01/2007)"

I've never really heard anything good about BT as an ISP though so I wouldn't expect the most stable or best line rate if I were you =p

RE: Upgrade BT by EBFL on 01-11-2007 at 05:33 PM

So, is mine still 'upgrading' because according to BT that whilst is upgrading the internet will randomly stop working. But i dont see any more improvement but my internet still sometimes stops working and its annoying

RE: Upgrade BT by absorbation on 01-11-2007 at 05:39 PM

It won't get faster, your connection can go up to 8MB, but you need to look at reality here. You lose speed because you need to connect to the main stream of wires underground, which can be miles away. You also lose speed if your neighbours also use BT, as they are accessing the same line as you, and thus you are sharing their speed. BT also has to go through your  phone line, which can slow your connection down.

All these factors can slow your connection down. It all depends on where you live, I wouldn't expect it to get faster, your Internet speed won't be faster by some magical force, it's real wires underground that do all the work :).
