Hmm, I thought of some more.
Anything by Roald Dahl or Enid Blyton. The Hardy Boys series. Hmm, what else? I didn't really read many child-esque books, I've always preferred classical literature. Beatrix Potter is cute reading, I suppose. Another vote for Eragon - loved it (even though I discovered it when I was 22, hah).

The Spiderwick Chronicals is a good series. The books arn't very big/thick though so they are probobly more so for younger readers.
