Dose any one know of free webhosting that supports / because when i upload my files to the ftp folder it says i am not authourised and other things.

Is there free webhosting that allows this?

What's "/"?
RE: free webhosting by hmaster on 01-14-2007 at 04:22 PM

I think they're meant to be full stops?

RE: free webhosting by plus on 01-14-2007 at 04:27 PM

RE: free webhosting by Moo on 01-14-2007 at 04:37 PM

See http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=16404 for web hosting services. And I do know quite a few that do support that.

I think the poor guy thinks that he needs to put the slash ('/' character) in the filename...

Your point? / is the directory seperator in a URL and in a URI. You cannot name a file with the / character as it is a reserved character which I think is what the original poster is trying to do.

For example:

www.google.com/sample

refers to a file called 'sample' in the root directory of the webserver (or to a directory called 'sample' but it would be a malformed URL in that case due to the missing trailing slash).

Now, the original poster's question is ambiguous. Does he wants to seperate his files in subdirectories (ie.: www.mysite.com/mydirectory/myfile/), does he want to have a domain to himself (ie.: www.mysite.com/ instead of room.freewebhosting.com/sites/users/mysite/) or does he simply doesn't understand that most FTP Servers are setup in a way that the webserver root is located in a subfolder of the FTP Root (ie.: /public_html/ and not /)?

Nagamasa, please do not reply uselessly when you have no knowledge of the subject.

Uhhhhhh... what the...

What Nagamasa was trying to point out makes perfect sense... that URL shows he meant something with folders. Just like you are guessing subdirectories too. And like you said yourself, using slashes in filenames isn't possible anyway.

My guess is that he's looking for a free hoster that gives you something like www.freehoster.com/username as opposed to username.freehoster.com or www.freehoster.com/~dodgystuff

These two have to be the best on this forum. Loads of space and lots of help if you need it. For hosting I would always recommend these two.

Free hosting won't allow you to install php. In most cases, php is already installed anyway so it really doesn't matter. However, I don't understand how

You should be a little more specific on what you need from a host.

ex. PHP, MySQL, SMTP

What do you plan on hosting? Forum? Web blog?
