Vista, 64bit, or 32? by vaccination on 01-17-2007 at 06:07 PM

Okay, so i'm planning on getting vista, what i want to know is, would it be best to get 64bit, or 32bit?

i have all the hardware necessities for 64bit. But if i remember correctly not all things work on 64bit?

So any advice, or insights into the world or 32/64bit would be greatly appreciated. thanks =D

I don't want any stupid replys like 'vista suxs' - 'wait till sp1' :dodgy:

I'd go 64 Bit but if a few things don't work right, switch before you have it going too long =p

Are you using more then 4 GB of ram?

Yes: Go for 64 Bit.

No: Dont bother!

IIRC all 32 bit software should work without problems because 64 bits cpu's also accept 32 bit code.

So I think the best thing would be 64 bit Vista.

I have 2GB

64bit doesn't run properly without 4gb? :|

Can anyone confirm?

if that's true then there shouldn't be any problems, other than this 4GB issue ¬¬

well i've been running 64bit vista

No flash - sucks
Lack of decent drivers - sucks
Overall difference from vista 32 - not much for the good

however i'd suggest it in the hope that support and compatibility flows after general release

No, 64bit supports more than 4gb, 32bit doesn't. :P

Oh, so i can still run 64bit efficiently with 2gb ram?

yes of course you can

I'm configuring my new PC as we speak :p...

Didn't want to go with Vista yet because I want to play around with vista in a virtual machine or dual boot first + not all my hardware has Vista drivers yet. But I installed 64bit Windows XP which is the same deal when it comes down to your question...

Finding 64bit XP drivers for all the hardware wasn't a problem, only the 64bit drivers for my TV card were a bit hidden on the site.

For over 4GB you really need 64bit, 32bit just doesn't support it. But you can run 64bit with 2GB or less too like in my case. 32bit applications are able to run on a 64bit OS, but there are some problems with a few programs... haven't run into problems myself, but i just only finished doing Windows Update and installing drivers.

Isn't that more of a Vista thing, than a 64 bit thing, just cause vista is new not much drivers have been made.

yes it is (hopefully)

i can't wait to see x64 dual core tweaked firefox :D

some reason firefox unexpectedly freezes my whole computer if i close a tab (Normally happens if i'm in 'YTMND mode' with about 3 ytmnd's loading up and i close one of them for whatever reason)

-------------------------------------------------------

Although saying that, logitech haven't made any x64 drivers for their webcams leaving my lovely little one in the dark..... and it's not for lack of demand, there are whole forums and websites dedicated to pestering logitech for x64 drivers they keep saying soon, for over 3 years now, comparisons have been made and the most detailed answer back from them has been that Microsoft did something to USB so it works faster in an x64 environment but in doing so buggered up something allowing them to make drivers for video devices easily

Everything in the Vista 64-bit version is in the 32-bit version. MS didn't add anything that wouldn't run on both versions. Also, according to GRC.com, the 64-bit kernel is more secure, due to higher intrinsic levels of protection.

Personally, I'd install the 64-bit version, if only to avoid reinstalling Vista in the future.

i think i heard that there's a limited amount of printers that support 64-bit versions of XP and Vista so id stick with 32-bit if your printer's not compatible. but on the other hand, vista 64-bit is {apparently} more secure and reliable. its a tough choice because you don't want to buy a new printer if it's not going to work with your computer do you?
