The La Fonera is a wireless access point given away for free by FON under the condition that you connect it and allow other users to use it. It is based on OpenWRT, but is locked down to prevent tampering with its software.
:dodgy:
quote:
The La Fonera is a locked down system: Configuration is usually not done on the real device, but instead it retrieves its setup data from the FON server. So to configure your network parameters like public and private ESSID or WPA passphrase, you log in to your FON account and change the settings on their website. During boot the boot sequence, the La Fonera then contacts the FON server and retrieves its network configuration.
:dodgy:

I'd rather spend $50 on a router that I have control over. :-/

RE: Free router by MeEtc on 02-12-2007 at 05:30 AM

i'm leeching from someone else now

RE: Free router by Woraug on 02-12-2007 at 08:13 AM

I'm not too worried about anyone stealing a wireless connection around here.  No one within a three block radius of my house even owns a computer.  In my town of 4,000, there's probaby a grand total of a dozen people who would even know how to leech it.

::EDIT::  I take it back.  There is one guy a block away who has a computer.  But I had to show him how to hook his phone line to it.  So yea...

RE: Free router by prashker on 02-12-2007 at 05:10 PM

RE: Free router by John Anderton on 02-12-2007 at 05:33 PM

RE: Free router by Ezra on 02-12-2007 at 06:42 PM

Yeah, just order it and re-flash it with DD-WRT or Open-WRT :P

EDIT: There is already a beta port of dd-wrt for the Fonera device

RE: Free router by Adeptus on 02-13-2007 at 12:45 AM

FON is not a bad idea if it became widespread.  Although it has a for-profit company behind it, I don't think it is very nice to request their free hardware if you have no intention of using it as intended.

This situation is similar to the abuse of the free Ubuntu Linux CD offer (which, unsurprisingly, has since been withdrawn).  What is free to you, cost somebody else money.  People and companies give things away to promote a cause or idea; I'd urge anyone contemplating taking advantage of such promotions to a wasteful end to stop and consider how you feel about the cause in question -- if you think it's worthwhile, the least you can do is not hinder it by wasting their limited funds.

RE: Free router by Rolando on 02-13-2007 at 01:31 AM

Hmm, I'll order mine I guess

RE: Free router by MC Inferno on 02-13-2007 at 01:45 AM

Do I Really Know What It'd For? Nope.
Will I Ever Need It? Nope.
Do I Really Care If It Does Come Or Not? Nope.

Am I Getting One? You Damn Right I Am.

Edit: ;)

Edit 2: Sorry About Writing Like This again, I forgot y;all had a problem wit it... dizzie moment. CBA goin back and changing it all.

FONERO PROMISE

I promise to connect the La Fonera and keep it active from the moment I receive it. If I can’t keep this Promise I will give the La Fonera to other person interested in becoming part of the Community.

lmao
