Should i leave sixth form? Advice Please. by M73A on 02-26-2007 at 03:19 PM

urgh, i dont know what the fuck to do, my school are such pricks. Im taking A Level maths, and im failing like no ones business, im getting straight U's and have got as low as 0 on tests....

My schools attitude is take 4 Alevels or leave.... last year and EVERY other year before, classes have been allowed to drop one of their a-levels and stick with the AS in whatever they drop....

but now its do 4 or leave? and i really am considering leaving...

any advice?

Unfortunately that is a decision you will have to make yourself..

I dont know exactly how the school is but if you dont think that school will be good enough to teach you in a decent way and you are not happy there then i think you should consider leaving..

This is all i can help..
Sorry

It sounds like you should obtain some tutoring.  You've obviously fallen behind.  Math, in particular, is a subject that builds on previous material.  Your problems now are most likely due to not paying enough attention last year, or possibly even further back.

Think about it this way -- plenty of other people can do it.  Unless you believe yourself to be less smart than they are and that's fine with you, you can do it too.  It may take you spending your free time reviewing what you were supposed to have learned before.  It may take tutoring.  Whatever it takes, it certainly can be done.

i absolutely hate maths, it is incredibly boring, now i have to more than double the amount of time a week i have to spend doing it because i can't do it.

the people who are now in year 13 were allowed to drop a subject, and i was planning on dropping maths. but now i can't, and now its either do it or leave. it wouldn't be so bad if it was a subject i wanted to do well in. the only reason i picked it was because we had to choose 4 and it was the best of what was there... so i didnt really want to do it in the first place >.<

To be honest, I've been thinking about quiting my 6th Form too. Luckily I don't have it as bad as you, and only have to do 3 A Levels in the 2nd year.

If you really aren't happy, then try and see if you can start a course at college or something. If not, it's best to talk to your teacher, to try and get some help with things. Or just stick it out.

i dont really think its one of those things that you should get other people to decide for you, it all depends on what you're doing, whether you like doing it, and what you want to do instead/after you leave....etc good luck with your desision though x

Have you tried talking to your maths teacher about this and possibly principal and people like that to get their opinion of what is you best option.  I think their advice would be a very good thing to get because they know your situation better than us and they also know (and possible be able to change) the school policy.  Furthermore, if you are having this trouble then it might be nice for future students if you stand up and tell them your reasoning behind not liking it so as other people don't get put into your situation.

yeah think of the qualifications you could get when/if you graduate.

It really depends on exactly what you plan to do when you finish. Will you need the maths then?

im not gonna use the decision of this poll to decide what i do, i just wanted some other peoples opinions.

The school have changed their policy, they want eveyone to do 4 a levels, but when we joined, we had to do 3 and one AS.

its not just me in this situation, everyone in the year who didnt want to do 4 a levels is considering going to a college instead.

Thanks for the advice

Are you in Lower 6th or Upper 6th? If you are in Upper 6th, then you only have a few more weeks (I have about 6 teaching weeks left) before you are free, it'd be a shame to fall at the last hurdle.

If you are in Lower 6th, I would stick it out for the rest of the year, even if you do crap in AS Maths, then it doesn't matter because you can then go to college and do the three subjects you want.
It'll be really difficult to join a new school/college mid year, and your grades will probably suffer as a result.

Do you have any dyscalculia ?
I read from someone here that even if you have problems at Maths, you can solve it. Unfortunately it's not my case at all, maybe because I have done speech therapy for Maths (sorry I don't know if speech therapy will be the exact translation since it doesn't have any link with problems about speaking, spelling....) early enough to correct this problem. I don't say that anyone with problems at Maths has dyscalculia, but I think that it's a possibility to explore.

i got an A at gcse, but core 1 and 2 are just the stuff i didnt understand at gcse, in more detail.

im in lower sixth.

Is there a law that says about not changing a contract halfway through, i and everyone else signed up for sixth form with all information stating you can choose to drop a subject or carry one (have it in writing) but now, halfway through sixth form theyve decided to change it.... surely thats not allowed?

I'd argue that they would have to stick with what you argeed to at the start. I mean, it's not fair on you, especially if it's causing undue stress. I've been in that position and I had to drop a subject because I was on the verge of a breakdown.

Try talking to someone about it, explain how you are feeling about it. The way I see it is if you have to continue with it, your not going to be able to concentrate on the other subjects, and therefore not do so well with them.

If you think you are wasting time and effort staying then go. But you should do the best you can and if it means going through all those tests and working your ass off then stay. But think about what you do really hard, discuss it with other people because this is a big decision and making the wrong choices can be bad.
