What did you say? (Dialects) (Added another q) by MeEtc on 02-26-2007 at 03:50 PM
As we are spread out all over the world, it's probably a sure thing that we all have our own ways of saying different words and pronouncing them differently. I'm going to try to see if we can all collaborate and exchange some of these differences. Below is a list of descriptions and pictures for some items that I do know of that have different names, spellings and/or pronunciations. If anybody wants to add to this list, please PM me and don't post in the thread, to avoid confusion.
Also, if English is not your primary spoken language, feel free to post in your mother tongue too, as long as you provide a literal translation to English. By literal, I mean what an online translator might translate to. Example: "Hello" in French usually translates to "Bonjour" but a literal translation back to English would be "Good Day"
So, for each of the things below, provide the proper spelling, a pronunciation if needed, and translation if needed. Pronunciations can be in the form of a phonetic spelling, or an audio clip, or some other way (how about posting the ID# of a voice clip from MsgPlus?)
1.These words are written in different ...?
2. The fuel that makes most vehicles run is known as ...?
3. Each of these vehicles are commonly known as what (name for each):
4. These vehicles usually use a different fuel known as ...?
5.On top of most buildings there is a:
6. Some call it a fruit, some call it a vegetable, but this thing is really called a ...?
Nagamasa has requested that I add some some more to the list, specifically ones about 'personal sanitation'...
So how about this:
7. What is this thing and the room you usually find it?
8. What do you call the " . " character?
EDIT your original post rather than posting again please!

...and I'm American.
"Ruff" is just some noise a dog makes, and a homophone for "rough."

That didn't really help, in fact it confused me more, because I pronounce 'spoof' differently to what you are insinuating
