RE: What was your first computer? by Weyzza on 02-28-2007 at 06:33 AM

Pentium MMX 166Mhz
16MB of RAM
2MB graphic card
2GB Hard drive
Windows 95.

I successfully screwed the PC up when I was trying to install Win 98.
Then I had to bring the PC to the store to let me them install it, and I had to upgrade my graphic card 4MB because it was "burnt"
But, I was happy with the new graphic card because I could watch movies.

RE: What was your first computer? by NiteMare on 02-28-2007 at 08:00 AM

i have no idea what it was, i just remember it had windows 1.0 on it, and you had to close down windows just to open up word:P, but it had sim city on it. fold down, keyboard, 5 inch floppy, small green screen which you turned on and controled the contrast from a single knob in the back

RE: What was your first computer? by Funness on 02-28-2007 at 09:31 AM

A 286, I can't remember much about it but I remember having to use a  3.5" floopy to boost the memory in order to play some games on it.

RE: What was your first computer? by markee on 02-28-2007 at 12:58 PM

* markee wishes his first computer had a HDD

But I guess 2x5" floppy drives were about as good as you could get for a PC....

BTW, I dont really remember that computer, I do remember the next one which we used to run a dos interface rather than windows..... we got it about 16 years ago I think and my first was purchased before I was born I'm quite sure

RE: What was your first computer? by CookieRevised on 02-28-2007 at 05:51 PM

First computer I "used" (not really used, but rather pushed on buttons and played one or two games) was a ZX 81 (red color), and a ZX Spectrum 82 with a wooping 48K memory and 3.5MHz speed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZX_Spectrum
[Image: 280px-ZXSpectrum48k.jpg]
This was also the oldest computer I ever wrote a program for.
I still have it (incl. all manuals, etc) and it still works...

After that when I grew older we got a Commodore 64:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_64
[Image: 320px-Commodore64.jpg]
with 64 Kb RAM.. OMG! Still have boxes full of floppies with games (original version of MANIAC MANSION... WHOOOHOO) and also many cassette tapes (instead of floppies which were 'state of the art' and with disk drives as big as a modern designed media center..., computers worked mainly with tapes). Also all the manuals, etc, and working (although keyboard has many sticky keys :p)

This was also a computer which you could literally pull chips out and replace them, solder your own connections, etc... It was a tweakers' computer, so to speak :p

After that, my first "Personal Computer" was a 286 with a CGA graphics card (I believe with DOS 3.0), then switched to a Tulip 286 (DOS 4 and 5) with Hercules graphics card, which is b/w but with special high resolution (7xx x 500) (it was a "Tulip").

From there it went 386 (Windows 3.x), 386DX, 386DX2 (Win 3.11), 486DX2, 486DX4, Pentium (Win 95), etc...

And somewhere in between I sometimes used an Atari and my nephew had an Amiga...

Oh my, such one (from the HP Vectra series) is still sitting next to me (though it is a Pentium, Vectra XM): picture (never mind the extreme mess... a bomb exploded :p)

RE: What was your first computer? by Thor on 02-28-2007 at 06:05 PM

It was a custom build one.

10GB Of storage.
It had a CD-drive and a floppy!
224MB of RAM.
Some weird AMD-processor which isn't easy to find today. :p
And an even harder to find AMD-graphics card. Something with 3D in it... :-/

RE: What was your first computer? by Jesus on 02-28-2007 at 08:00 PM

the first PC I bought myself had something like this: AMD K6 350MHz (@428MHz), 128MB RAM, 16MB graphics and 6GB HDD. I upgraded this PC until what I have now, but in fact there's nothing left from what I had then. Last thing I had from the beginning was the case, which I replaced about 3weeks ago :P

Before I had my own I used to use my dad's PCs, of which I don't know the exact specs. The first PC I remember here at home was one of those with a 2-digit LED screen showing the clock speed (first 80, later 99)

RE: What was your first computer? by ins4ne on 02-28-2007 at 09:40 PM

Self-build

Pentium 3 1GHz
128MB SDRAM
3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 GFXcard edit: 64MB

Kinda bullshit compared to my new one ^^

RE: What was your first computer? by YottabyteWizard on 03-02-2007 at 10:36 PM

Well, the first one i used was a 386 computer (dont remember the speed, i think it was 25 MHz or something) with a 120 MB HDD.

Then we upgraded it to a 486 with 75 MHz.

The two computers were running MSDOS 4 or 6, and Windows 3.1 and color display (VGA, 16 colors capable only)

And on the next year, probably 2, we added a CDROM drive 1x. It was the sh*t and it came with a DOOM Demo CD :O which it got destroyed like 3 or 4 years later when we had a Pentium III 600 MHz computer with a 52x drive, the drive was spinning so fast, that it cracked inside :'(

Back to the topic, also my family had a toshiba satellite laptop, monochromatic display, MSDOS 6, WIndows 3.1, with 4 MBs of RAM and 75 MHz CPU speed AFAIR.
