wtf... Speakers smell... by Kenji on 03-12-2007 at 05:31 PM

Well, What happend was i put my amp up almost full blast. And some horrible smell stunk my room out. So I turned it all off and took a look. There was nothing atall burnt or melted :S

Anyone know what could have made that smell? :S

Also, do you think it will be safe to use them again... I dont want to burn the pub down..

Speakers x2 Unbranded, about 500w.
Also had 3 more speakers... but i dont think they have anything to do with it..

Amp: Numark Dimension 4.

Thanks.

Logically speaking something must of melted to cause the smell. Judging by the smell and what speakers could be made of it could be rubber. I believe it's fine to keep using your speakers, but if the same thing keeps happening, I think you should get some expert advice and get them repaired if they are expensive :).

Never thought of that... It must be the rubber...

Yeah, limiting your amp to not overpower your speakers is a very good idea. Something that you should have done before plugging them in.

That could be part of it as well.

Hehe, I saw your avatar and thought that you were Tasha.

its the metal wire in your speakers getting red hot and melting the plastic and/or rubber around it. we did it to my friend's ones once and they started smoking!

try not to do it too often as it just makes the copper (if thats what they use) thinner and then the sound quality goes down. until the wires just go caputt. im probably competely wrong but thats what my dad told me.

cooper doesn't 'get thinner' or evaporate by itself =/

increasing volume = increase of voltage (so u might end up with some melting wires as simple as that)

BTW
check how many OHMS your speakers and your amp support.

Your speakers are going to burn down long before the copper melts.

Gah, i found what it is now..

I was hoovering and i noticed that some of the cables had melted together.. They were brand new aswell...

Took me about 4 hours to put them up aswell... meh

Ill just use my old ones for now.

The 2 500w ones are 8 OHMS, not sure about the others, but they are pretty new.

And according to this It is 8 OHMS.

Ill try and split it between 2 amps aswell...

I meant the plastic material that surrounds wires DUH!!!! :D

Dazmo - the important thing is that u can't have more OHMS in amp than speakers but you can have more OHMS in speakers than in amp.

btw u mentioned that your speakers r unbranded so perhaps they r made by "small people" and lack quality.
