Text formatting issues by Step666 on 03-25-2007 at 03:30 AM

Ok, so I realise this has probably been covered already but I cannot for the life of me find a pre-existing thread on the subject
No matter what terms I use to search with, I can't seem to find a thread that actually addresses the problem I'm having.

Basically, I can't format text when chatting to someone in MSN, I mean I can but it doesn't work.

The BB-code tags work at my end but when the reach the person I'm chatting to, they see the actual tags as opposed to the formatted text (IIRC, they're an msgplus thing, aren't they? So if she doesn't have msgplus, you wouldn't expect them to work, would you?).
CTRL+B works at my end, but again when what I've written reaches the other end, instead of it being formatted, there are two little boxes around the text (like there is in the 'composition' box when I'm typing). CTRL+I doesn't even work...

I don't know if it's worth mentioning that the person I'm chatting to is on a Mac, she uses either MSN for Macs or something called 'Adium' but none of the ways I have of formatting the text work in either program.
On the other hand, in Adium, when she uses the weird Mac button instead of CTRL, bold, italic, underline, they all work properly and display correctly at my end as well as hers.

This is really bugging me so I was hoping someone here might be able to shed some light on it.
Thanks.

The other contact needs to have Messenger Plus! Live installed to see BBCode style formatting and Messenger Plus! 3.xx installed to see the IRC style formatting.  As she is on a Mac then she will have neither and so her computer cannot interpret the extra characters.  This is the reason why she cannot see the formatting and sees the extra characters yet you will be able to see it nicely formatted.

When you say 'the IRC-style formatting', is that the CTRL+... one?

So, does Messenger itself not have some way of formatting the text?

Well, um yes.

Plus! > Prefrences > Customize > Use IRC Style Formatting.

It does not.

Yeah, sorry, I figured as much with the IRC thing, just I don't actually use IRC, so I wasn't 100% certain.

I realise I'm probably about to ask another blindingly stupid question but how come the IRC commands don't have italic?

Sorry to ask so many questions, this is just really bugging me - especially given that stuff she formats at her end shows up fine at my end.
I stupidly told her and now she's taunting me... :(

most IRC clients don't support italic font, however messenger does. The Ctrl-I was added, even though IRC clients don't do this.
Your friend cannot see the correctly formatted and coloured text that you send because your friend does not have MP! or MP!L installed. She cannot install either because MP! and MP!L are only for Windows-based computers. It is unlikely there ever will be a Mac version.

You can see the formatting just fine because you obviously have Plus installed. Without Plus, the formatting just turns up as the formatting characters because there isn't anything to replace those characters with formatting.

No, yeah, thanks.
I get that the problem is she doesn't have plus installed and that the reason for that is that she's a heretical Mac-user (:P).

Out of interest, even though it doesn't make any difference, what is the IRC-style command for italic?
Because CTRL+I doesn't work.
