[Question] SATA, ATA, IDE and all that stuff by L. Coyote on 03-28-2007 at 07:27 PM

I need a new HDD for my PC, since my reliable external HDD seems to be having I/O errors lately ().

Anyway, I found one for US$60 and it's 160GB. It's the lowest price I could find here. I like it. But I need to know if I can actually put it in the CPU.

The HDD I like says it's S-ATA. Ummm, how do I know what mine is? Where do I look, other than inside the case (which I can't open (please2stoptellingmetodosokthnx))?

Or maybe it doesn't matter? I dunno. :P

Remember, I'm absolutely clueless about hardware. You'll have to explain it to me as if I were more stupid than usual.

That's beside the point. My tech will do it for me.

I meant, that my case is... shut with... um... what's the word for those little metallic pieces? I forgot. :P

I dont think there is any other way to find out than opening your case....

SATA has cables like this: http://www.infowester.com/img_art/hd_sata_seagate.jpg

IDE has cables like this: loooong link

EDIT: its not that hard to open the case.... just open it and look whats there, then screw it back up again

I'll try to see what's in there, then. Thanks.

Edit: Dude, it's not a normal case. Otherwise I'd do it.

Really, I had a feeling people would point that out to death... *sigh*

Start > Run > msinfo32

Components > Storage > Disks

Select the model number, hit Ctrl+C, and paste it into Google. :P

You could download Everest Home Edition and look for your motherboard's name.
Then, you could go to the manufacturer's site, and check the specs about that specific model, and see if it has any SATA slots.

You saved my life. :P

Now, I'm supposing the thing I'm looking for is in the "Storage/RAID" description of the motherboard, right? The site says it has 4 SATA. :o

If so, I think that HDD is what I need. :D
