Vista Problem by Vimto on 04-07-2007 at 12:33 PM

Vista arrived this morning so I took the disk out and put it in but nothing comes up and when I got to My Computer > DVD Drive nothing is in there. Absolutely nothing is happening.
I've tried re-booting but nothing happens.
I've tried run D: but it says "Please insert a disk" but I already have. I've been trying for about 15 minutes now and nothing.
The disk is not damaged or anything.
Anyone had the same problems? Or now what to do?
Thanks.

diagnose the problem:

-to check if drive, try to insert another bootable cd/dvd
-to check if dvd, try in another pc

Yeah I think their might be a problem with the Drive. I've tried my mums driving test thingy in it but it comes up "Enter disk into drive" again. Can I fix this?

You're installing it on a laptop right? :P

If you can, take your laptop to a friends house or something and see if the CD works on their computer. Grab an memory stick or an ipod or something and put all the files from the DVD on it, then put all the files onto your laptop in C:\ and click on setup.exe. You could try to do it from the memorystick/ipod too..

I dont know if that would work, but its worth a try if you really want it.. *-)

Or....... download it from a torrent and use your completely legal serial key....

This might be a stupid question but, are you sure that your drive can read DVD disks? :P

This is an extremely bad idea. The new image based installation of Vista allows anyone to edit the installer with ease (simply by unpacking, changing it and repacking it). Your installation could come with a prepacked rootkit, for example.

What you should do is simply check if the DVD works in other drives. If it does, then your own drive is (almost) broken, and you should get it replaced. If the DVD doesn't work in the other drives either, then you should get it replaced (because it is malfunctioning).

Trying to hack around the problems is really not a good alternative.
