[Request] Know about convo before getting a message by Noam on 04-07-2007 at 10:13 PM

I don't know if this is possible, or has been requested before, but I'm thinking of a script that can identify a contact that's about to send you a message even before he hits ENTER.
Sounds imaginary, I know, but I think it could be possible... You know how when someone is about to send you a message, and he's typing it up, a "XXXXX is typing a message" comes up at the bottom of the window? Well, maybe Messenger can see that before the message is sent, and let you know as soon as it happens.

Is it possible? Will someone make it? If it's possible, I don't think it should be too complicated.

Not possible plus it's an invasion of privacy and could be breaking various laws around the world.

Invasion of privacy? You've gotta be kidding. How is it an invasion of privacy?

Well, it is not possible. If you mean when they open a conversation. If you mean when they're writing then you'll see at the bottom "x is writing a message" and that's about it. You can't be notified when they open a conversation anymore.

But since the messenger gets the message when talking, doesn't messenger get the message before the convo is opened?

He's talking about the "XXX is writing a message".

Isn't it sent nomather if a convo is open or not? And in that case shouldn't xniff sniff it?

I'm not saying be notified when they open a conversation window, only once they start typing. You know, once they're "connected". If you have the ability to know they're typing before they send a message, why not be able to know when that message is the first in a convo?

edit: Yes, what he said. ^

because in various countries you are considered to be "hacking" a person's computer by obtaining the message before they even send it over the internet. This is invading another persons privacy and in some countries, you could be facing severe punishment for it....plus think about it carefully from the other point of view...how would you like it if someone saw what you were writing, wrotye and sent a message based on it but you change it before your contact realises that they sent the message. And what about if your writing in the wrong conversation window?

Think thoroughly before putting in a request such as this as there are many implications and ethically it's wrong to do such a thing.

In theory yes but in reality no, because the message still hasn't been sent to the server until the enter key or send button is hit.

People, you're reading it all wrong. I never said that, MattyRid.
I never said I want to know when someone opens a window.
I never said I want to know what people are typing.
I said I want to know when a contact is typing to me. This is a built-in feature in Messenger, and I just want to extend that simple function. I never said hack.

Don't twist my words.

If that's true, then that's all I wanted to know.
But that doesn't make a lot of sense. If you can't know when someone is typing to you before he sends the message, then that whole feature of "XXX is typing" wouldn't be there. But it is there, and it works.

edit 2:

I just tested two scenarios. If a contact has had contact with you in the current session, you can see that he is typing before he sends the message. But if he disconnects, and logs in again, you can't see anything till he sends a message. (but that second scenario isn't completely 100% sure, I didn't test it thoroughly)

Those were your words, and what I have based myself on is that. The understanding I have is that you want to see what a contact writes before he even sends it. So if it's not that you mean, then make yourself a bit more clear with that line there, because that's how it came across to me.
RE: [Request] Know about convo before getting a message by Noam on 04-07-2007 at 11:04 PM

I was crystal clear, Matty.
I said I want to know WHEN someone is typing to me.
Not WHAT he is typing.

It's all in the detail.

edit: Oh, geeze, I wonder why you haven't replied yet.

What you're requesting isn't invading anyones privacy at all as you only want to get notified when someone starts typing a message to you, i.e. a popup saying "user xy has started typing a message" and don't want to know what he's typing in advance.

See CookieRevised's reply to [request]Key press notifier for a script that does exactly that.
(note: it doesn't display a toast telling you that the user is typing when you already have a conversation window open with this contact)

andrey, thank you very much. I'm glad someone knows what they're talking about... and knows how to read.
