YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by aNILEator on 04-19-2007 at 07:13 PM

To coincide with the 7.04 release of ubuntu they've teamed up with another company to provide free 32 and 64 bit CD's :D

I ordered their 2x32 and 1x64 Bit CD package

I'm going to download the 64bit DVD as well

What, they order three of each? :P

Hmm...I'm thinking about downloading ubuntu, but I dunno what I need first, if I need anything.

Do I need to get "Linux" (I've heard of it before, but I'm clueless :() first, to run ubuntu? Or is it included with the instally thingy?

Dunno what's going on...:P
RE: YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by WDZ on 04-20-2007 at 04:42 AM

ps:
* Rolando slaps wdz around a bit with a large trout.

RE: YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by aNILEator on 04-21-2007 at 10:24 PM

given the choice i'd want
1 x 32bit PC CD
1 x 32bit DVD
1 x 64 CD
1 x 64 DVD

or at least both DVD's or both CD's
instead the pack is 2 32bits and 1 64 bit cd's which seems silly they should add a 2 pack of one of each then i'd have it

RE: YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by andrewdodd13 on 04-21-2007 at 10:45 PM

I got the 3 pack (2x32, 1x64) simply cause I need one 32 bit and 64 bit, and there wasn't an option for just one of each. :|

I've actually already downloaded Kubuntu on this machine, I have to say, I do like it - although there are always niggly little things - such as all the MSN clients have horrible fonts, amarok skips the first few seconds of each song (ok, so all my tunes are in WMA format, but that shouldn't matter), etc.

Admittedly, I'm surprised it still works since I've:
- Used the server install CD.
- apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
- apt-get autoremove xubuntu-desktop
- apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
- apt-get remove linux-image-server
Just to get where I am. The Ubuntu team really do put a lot of work into it making sure everything works. They really are pushing Linux into the hands of the general public.

I chose three because I'll be keeping one disc inside my case, so I don't loose it.  One attached to one of my laptops in case I need it when I'm out.  one one tucked safely away as a "just-in-case".
RE: YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by Vilkku on 04-22-2007 at 07:20 AM

I ordered three as well, I needed both types so I was happy when I saw they had a pack with both in it. From the last bunch I ordered (got 5) I gave a few away, so a extra CD or two might be handy.

Mr. Shuttleworth mentioned recently that he doesn't think Linux is ready for the desktop yet. I think the more important thing is, people don't understand it. I installed Debian on my fathers computer [I'm staying here for a few months, might as well get comfortable] and he still complains that he can't use it, because, for example, he doesn't know how to get his emails. If he took three seconds to look at the screen and see the large envelope on it that opens Evolution, he'd be fine, but there's this big fear of the unknown I guess, and that's the major barrier to entry.

I ordered myself an Ubuntu CD [I can copy it- one is enough], I mostly want to put it on my mother and sisters computer and see how they go, and it'd be great for those "well, I've always wanted to try Linux" conversations. I carry other Linux live CDs, but if I was going to actually install one on a non-technical users computer it would probably have to be Ubuntu or Xubuntu.
RE: YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by Yawn Im Tired on 04-26-2007 at 02:13 AM

Once I get my old computer going, I'll be installing Ubuntu, its the only distro that I like.

ok, now you've done that, , is this Comment from Canonical or from Billy Gates impersonating Canonical .. if i remember Redhat made some statement similiar to that a few years ago, but IMO even if Canonical Made tht statement, wouldnt suprise me since he's using a Windows Like installer in Ubuntu

Honestly, the statement is taken out of context a bit, and was made during the beginnings of the dell Linux kerfuffle. I think what he was trying to say was a disclaimer to stop the birth of millions of n00bs, especially the ones that will give up after five minutes of wondering where the "start menu" is.

The link is an interview by Andreas Proschofsky while Mark was bouncing around Europe, so it doesn't strike me as being a fake.

I don't think he'd deny that Ubuntu makes a lot more sense than Windows, say, but it's getting through the years of conditioning that makes it hard to convince people to switch.

    * 3 CDs requested on 2007-04-20. 3 CDs were approved and sent to the shipping company on 2007-04-23. Please note requests usually take from 4 to 6 weeks to deliver, depending on the country of shipping.

this is what i hate,  i know these cd's are free, but are/will people actually use these cd's? . i'd like to see Canonical stop this " shipit free program '

They do state the requested CD function is better suited to CD give-aways for college/university students etc, I for one could see a PC magazine requesting XXXX CD's for giving away with their monthly mag along with some other software and guides etc inside, infact i'd actually buy it if there were :D
RE: YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by Chris4 on 04-26-2007 at 11:13 PM

Ordered a single CD a few days ago :)

RE: YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by Lou on 04-26-2007 at 11:45 PM

3 Cds (the x86 and x64 pack). I want to try 64 bit again, but I'd also like a 32 bit version as this is the only pc that's capable of 64 bit in the house :P

Thanks.

RE: YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by aNILEator on 04-27-2007 at 01:19 PM

I installed it but broke it trying to replace the graphics handler with something else and installing XGL or whatever it's called (I blame old tutorials)

I'll probably try again in summer or when there's some X1600 support

RE: YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by aNILEator on 05-10-2007 at 01:04 PM

Forget about using beryl btw. :P Unless you want to use an old suckish version of it. ;)

Compiz is quite nice though.
If you follow the tutorial that is linked to at wiki.beryl-..... to cchtml.com, then it covers it all. :)

Debian is a fantastic distro. Like Ubuntu, but serious :D

I don't think the two really compete though- Debian is a lot more fully featured, but for a non-techie's first dive into Linux I'd still recommend Ubuntu.

I got mine today, btw. Haven't tried it.
RE: YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by Woraug on 05-16-2007 at 08:51 PM

It'll be a while before I can test mine.  My main HD ate shit.  I can access stuff on it through Knoppix, I just can't boot to it.  So I gotta back everything up to another drive, install XP, get that set back up, and then move onto Ubuntu.

RE: YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by andrewdodd13 on 05-16-2007 at 09:07 PM

Side Topic: I take it you've tried fixboot + fixmbr from the windows recovery console?

My Ubuntu CDs came the other day. It's a shame I could only find Ubuntu CDs, personally I prefer Kubuntu... which is what I have installed at the moment.

RE: YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by MeEtc on 05-16-2007 at 10:45 PM

I gots my CD today :D

RE: RE: YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by Woraug on 05-17-2007 at 02:30 AM

I mean when I have this drive hooked up, it won't boot at all, it just hangs at a black screen.  But oh well, I've been needing to put my bigger drive in anyway, this jut gave me a reason to.  (Yes, it was the drive, cause XP installed and boots fine and dandy with the new one).

Anyway, we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

RE: YAY Free ubuntu CD's again! by Lauren1984 on 05-17-2007 at 04:17 AM

That should be ok, GRUB setup will automagically detect Windows and fix the boot.
