Bigger Bulky monitor or smaller LCD? by Oxy on 04-20-2007 at 10:40 AM

Which is better..
1 - A bulky black 17" monitor
-or-
2 - a silver 15" LCD monitor

The thing is, I've always wanted a 17" monitor, but it's quite big and takes up the desk space so i can't have both.. (note, the black one hasn't been tested yet )

LCDs are dominant here volume-wise (they're not bulky :P), but CRTs are dominant colour-wise (you get more accurate colours*)

So in the end, it probably comes down to:

Do you need the desk space, or do you need the accuracy**?

*I've never really tested this, I have a CRT, so my post itself may be inaccurate.

**I've heard a lot about this response-time thingo, which LCDs seem to be better at, so this also may be inaccurate.

Not particually, but my desk is rather small - i don't want a big screen right up close to my face.. whereas the LCD can go back as far as i want..

As long as it's not a great deal less, no.

But then again, as you said:

And i don't really want the big CRT screen right in my face.. Seeing as i can't move my desk much futher away from my wall to give it space, and i can't move my desk chair back at all because my bed is behind it -.-

Why not a 17" LCD?

EDIT: I have dual CRT one 19" and one 17" on a little desk :D

RE: Bigger Bulky monitor or smaller LCD? by Supersonicdarky on 04-20-2007 at 11:16 AM

the 17" crt only has about 16" of screen size because for crts, the size is measures from corner to corner of the box, but for lcds, only the actual display area is measured. soi say go for lcd.

Because that would cost money.. I got a spare 17" CRT around and i'm currently using a 15" LCD.

What resolutions will both monitors runs on? And for the CRT, how many Hz? And how many ms for the LCD?

1280 x 1024 For the CRT, and 1024 X 768 for LCD

I have no idea for those two, they both came without user manuals or anything and i am unaware of any other way of finding out..

The crt will have a better precision. and it also has a good resolutoin.
1024x768 is to heavy and buky for me and  for many others, so in this case the crt is winning...

I'd suggest the LCD, though I tend to think 17" is tiny anyway. I picked up my 19" LCD for AU$250, if you're looking to get one they aren't too much and I think the colour is better on my LCD than any CRT I've used in a home setup before. Is there any reason you can't use both? :D Besides, LCD screens don't flicker because the lamp is on continuously which if you're at the computer heaps is a great thing.

You can _not_ determine which is better just like that...

It depends on a lot of factors.

You need to give the complete specifications of both screens in order to compare them. You can have far better CRT than a LCD, and vice versa, depending on the specs.

Also, when you say LCD, do you mean a LCD or TFT, or Plasma, etc. etc...

Nobody can give you good advise before you state the exact and complete specs ;)

in the mean time, read:
http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=70...d=771529#pid771529
and
http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=70...d=771652#pid771652

which gives important info on both display types, including stuff which is misunderstood quite a lot.

Personally (and not taking space into consideration a lot) I would choose a CRT over an compareable(!) LCD anytime. The only time I would go for an LCD is when space is a very big issue.

Thanks for the advice so far everyone (NOTE: special thanks to cookie, his links were lots of help)
right now, i have the CRT plugged in (testing reasons) and i love the really high resolution on it.. And the only real downsides atm are it's a big black bulky thing (which isnt that neat) and the other reasons stated above (not enough desk space etc..) But i like it..
So, i will think about it over the comming days and hopefully get more replies on this thread. :)

Cookie: or when the screen is of a considerable size. In contract jobs where you need significant screen real estate, you try carrying around a couple of 21"+ CRT screens every few weeks/months.

Still, none of that is applicable here. It's the user experience that matters. Your going to need to sit down with those options and see for yourself.

BTW, "CRTs update the screen in one go, LCDs not." is not quite true. LCDs can, but [strangely] don't usually, update a line at a time, but most are the same as newer CRTs that do a pixel at a time, left to right top to bottom. How can a device that uses a single beam of electrons update the whole screen in one go?

Viewsonic [who's 21" CRTs have been lugged around and stared at for fifteen hours a day for at least ten years by the engineers who came before me] do a concise comparison, if you can be bothered googling it.

I prefer CRTs purely for the fact that they're cheaper. I picked up a 19" for $45 not long ago.  Aside from one dead pixel, it's not bad.

big bulky monitors, go retro! (H)

RE: Bigger Bulky monitor or smaller LCD? by vaccination on 04-20-2007 at 04:41 PM

big bulky monitor? CRT FOO!

Anyway, I'd say 17" CRT if it's as good (atm I have a CRT and a LCD on dual monitors and the CRT is very old and thus not as god quality as the LCD)

Unless...

..you have enough desk space, and a graphics card which supports it, then I'd go for dual (Y)

RE: Bigger Bulky monitor or smaller LCD? by Nagamasa on 04-21-2007 at 01:00 AM

I say LCD because staring very close to a monitor isn't good for your eyes. It will probably 'cost' you more in the future because of the need for glasses than the need for a larger screen.

And I find LCDs are usually brighter too...
