if you got MSN+ you can do as DUCK! said
If you dont got msn+ than you cant change the color of the nick

you can change the colour of your nickname but you cant see it, only the people with Messenger Plus! Live can :)

For MP! 3.63 and lower, you will have to open a conversation window, and type: /nick <nickname>
Within <nickname>, include your desired screenname, and press Ctrl-K. A popup with various colours will appear to choose a colour.

and remember ppl without msg+! don't see the colours or at least i don't when i'm not using plus
