What are... by Voldemort on 04-24-2007 at 12:58 AM

thoughts made of?
electric impulses?

How are memories stored?

And it makes me wonder

Your head is humming and it wont go
In case you dont know,
The pipers calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow,
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.

Aaaanyway...
If memories are stored in your brain (which they seem to be, as your memory can be damaged if you hit your head), then they should be stored by electric impulses... now clue how they are stored however, and how the brain can store that much information for that long.

Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

and why can some animals (like the elephant) remember longer that others (the godd ol' fish!)

When you look at the size of the cranium (skull) of an elephant, and compare it to the size of the cranium of a goldfish, it is easy to see that an elephant holds alot more grey matter and has capability to remember more.

if you can be bothered to read the above link, it tells you (with alot of scientific terms and nonsense rubbish) how the brains stores and retrieves stuff... sort of :P;)

Heh, I read a book a lil while back, around Christmas methinks, and it said that memories were stored by a link of neurons in your brain. And the more links to that thought or thing in your brain(so the more neuron links) the easier it is to remember. (That's a very simplified version though, as I can't remember the details of it, I should really read that book again :P)

And yes, all signals in the brain are electrical signals. (AFAIK)

It should be electronic impulses as someone mentioned before.

Also, some can remember more than others due to what parts of the brain they use and how big the size of the brain is.

It's all abit complex really.

That's the great thing about life, we cannot explain it :)

yeash... the leprechaun does exist...^o) in a mental hospital;):P

yeah something about brain neurons linking together rings a bell
the more times you are required to remember something, the stronger/more link is created.

but we shouldnt really try to explain to too much, just be thankful for it:)

i expected a detailed post of how it works by adeptus or cookie, they are the ones who must know! :o

RE: What are... by LoochTheMan on 04-25-2007 at 11:55 PM

I had a thought, when you die your brain stops sending impulses or whatever functions it, but when you are born is there a time when your brain turns on as quick as it turns off when you die. I asked my bio teacher and he said that your mind develops slowly as you progress as a newborn into a fully developed baby. Hence why some babies are colourblind and things like that. I think its impulses, too complex for me.

Size doesn't matter much (where did I heared that before :p)... it is the amount of neural connections and 'twists' (synapses? or whatever they are called properly) in the brain IIRC (lol the irony...)...

PS: Voldemort, can you make a bit more descriptive topic title please?
